Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the reasons why more business practitioners are not implementing continuity plans within their organizations. Using the qualitative methodology, this research connected a multiple case study research design to identify the influences affecting several businesses not having a continuity plan in place. Through a series of interviews and open-ended questions, participants provided greater insight into the reasons this phenomenon exists. By asking business practitioners questions on the factors influencing their decision for or against incorporating a continuity plan, the goal of this study provides answers to this scholarly phenomenon. The methodology of this study connects the scholarly research stemming from the contingency theory with the issues facing business practitioners operating without continuity plans. This research questioned whether cost, time, and a need for standardization within the administrative aspect of business might serve as likely reasons for practitioners not having a continuity plan in place. These questions were asked to understand the reasons why more practitioners do not implement a process that scholars have found to be effective. The findings of this research indicates time as the most important factor impeding the business practitioner's ability to incorporate a continuity plan. While all themes addressed in this research provided a different aspect for why scholars have deemed continuity planning as effective, the findings of this research reveals the reasons why cost and a uniformed method of strategizing were found as relative influences among the concepts addressed, but were not unanimous as with the variable of time.
