Comparative education studies in the People's Republic of China

Abstract/Summary:
This study makes a comprehensive investigation into the status and trends in comparative education studies in the People's Republic of China. It treats comparative education studies as a particular form of academic endeavor in the societal context of China during the first post-Mao decade, examining and analyzing the emergence, development and evolution of comparative education studies form social, political, economic and cultural perspectives. It expounds the distinguishing features and looks into the causes for the development of comparative education in China, thus confirming that it is the nation's development that is the prime motivating force of the development of comparative education in the Third World countries.; On the basis of the first-hand data and of a content analysis of 2697 journal articles (published in four major journal devoted exclusively to comparative education studies from 1979 to 1989) and 123 scholarly books (written by Chinese scholars or translated from foreign languages and published from 1979 to 1989), this study deals with those dimensions of comparative education studies in China, such as: the national academic organization of comparative education (the Chinese Comparative Education Society), the institutions specializing in comparative education studies, the Chinese comparative educators, the training of graduate students majoring in comparative education and the research trends of comparative education studies.
