Abstract/Summary:
Emotionally Focused Therapy ('EFT') has been shown to help clients achieve beneficial long term results (Halchuk, Makinen & Johnson, 2010). However, there is no research from the perspective of former clients on how they achieved enduring relational success. This study seeks to understand the views of former clients by capturing their stories one year or more after treatment by an EFT therapist. The result of this qualitative study contains three overarching themes from the participants' stories. These three themes describe what these former clients believe helped them to maintain their relationship a year or more after therapy; and how, in their view, they achieved this. The study results also suggest that the way that couples tell their stories may provide information about the capacity of the couple to maintain an enduring relationship long after termination of EFT treatment.
