Abstract/Summary:
This research project was an exploratory analysis of the factor structure of the Body Checking Questionnaire (BCQ) to determine whether if, in its present configuration, it is a valid and reliable scale for use in Chinese behavioral research. The BCQ is a 23-item questionnaire utilizing a Likert-scale that examines three components: idiosyncratic checking, specific body parts, and overall appearance. The BCQ would be a valuable research tool in examining body image in China, would be helpful as a preventative measure and in clinical work with individuals with eating disorders in China, and would add another important scale that is reliable within cross-cultural research. The original factor structure of the BCQ was not found to be valid for use in China without significant modification. Examination and discussion regarding why the BCQ is not valid for use in China, as well as directions for future research, are explored.
