Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation reviewed the long-term challenges that military service members and veterans who have experienced traumatic combat-related major limb loss may endure years after initial injury. Although pertinent immediate consequences of limb loss were examined, the focus of the dissertation was on the long-term physical, psychological, and social barriers this population may face upon departure from a rehabilitation program and reintroduction into society. Its main purpose was to highlight how military service members and veterans who have returned to full participation in activities of daily living face the biopsychosocial stressors that persist across the lifespan. This dissertation illustrated how these lifelong obstacles may impact one's coping process, emotional functioning, acceptance of disability, self-concept, and overall quality of life across the life span. Clinical recommendations including protective factors and healthy coping strategies have been included for mental health professionals in order to help them effectively address mental health issues unique to this population as well as implement appropriate treatment interventions.
