Abstract/Summary:
Healthcare administrators would benefit from understanding various models of physician practice. This study examined the effectiveness of treatments rendered to elderly patients diagnosed with community acquired pneumonia, specifically examining hospitalists vs. non hospitalists in the acute hospital setting. Understanding more efficient ways to treat this population of patients could improve the operational abilities of the hospital setting. This was a comparative analysis examining the effectiveness and efficiency of these physician groups through length of stay. Length of stay is one measurement used by most healthcare institution as a measure of quality and efficiency. Previous research supports the idea that hospitalists are more efficient in the medical center type settings, creating the framework for this research taking place in the hospital setting.
