Abstract/Summary:
This record of study documents the experience acquired during my internship at Agilent Technologies for the Doctor of Engineering Program. During the internship, I had the opportunity to work with a geographically separated cross-functional team to develop a data acquisition system that could address targeted customers' needs in product design verification and characterization. In the spirit of the Doctor of Engineering Program, the internship study focused on developing an understanding and skills in various areas required for effective engineering development and management.; The internship assignment was divided into two parts. One part of the assignment was to serve as lead engineer in the overall firmware development process. The primary focus of this part of the assignment involved working closely with management and the firmware team in the areas of defining firmware tasks, scheduling, and team communication. For the second part of the assignment, the focus was on design and implementation of the specific firmware involving Calibration and Diagnostic Test for the data acquisition system.; In this study, some of the key elements pertinent to the firmware development process were identified. These key elements included problem analysis, software engineering process and team communication. The importance of these areas in delivering quality firmware was recognized and discussed. The paper also discusses the issues associated with both the high-level design and low-level implementation of Calibration and Diagnostic Test firmware.
