The purpose of this study was to examine community banks, their purpose, the services they provide to a local community, the changes they are facing, how, if any, they are different from large holding company banks, and how can they continue to add shareholder value in a changing financial services environment. The study differed from previous research in two ways. This study identified asset liability structural differences between large banks and community banks. This study also addressed the definition used in community banking research and found that the definition used can change the statistical results and possibly the conclusions.
