Abstract/Summary:
In this dissertation, I have studied energy-efficient solutions for resource-limited wireless networks, in which nodes are aware of their locations either by GPS devices or by running self-localization algorithms. The target application is monitoring and reporting events for which nodes' estimation accuracy of their location coordinates plays a critical role. This category of applications is very useful and popular in military, industrial and environmental areas. In my work, the event could be for example an unauthorized radio transmission in wireless sensor networks, for the intrusion detection scenario, or the occupancy of the spectrum resource in cognitive networks, for the spectrum sensing scenario. By designing novel prioritized cross-layering media access control schemes and by encouraging neighboring nodes' cooperation, the energy efficiency of the wireless network is improved. Optimization techniques and game theoretic approaches are exploited to obtain the optimal parameters in terms of the network performance, and to analyze the tradeoffs among different performance metrics. Both the theoretical analysis and the numerical simulation results show that a better network performance is achieved both in terms of detection probability and event location accuracy, with more efficient energy expenditure.
