Abstract/Summary:
A new receiver designed to equalize inter-symbol interference (ISI) in underwater acoustic channels (UWACs) using independent component analysis (ICA) is proposed.; The ICA-based equalizer uses the statistical characteristics of the received signals to separate multipath mixtures blindly. It reduces multipath interference gradually, through an iterative process in which interference converges to a steady state value after a small number of iterations.; The high convergence speed of the ICA-based equalizer makes it attractive for UWACs, whose rapidly-changing ocean environment demands rapid equalization methods.; While its complexity is comparable to that of the linear equalizer (LMS), the ICA-based equalizer is shown in simulation to perform significantly better than both the LMS and the Equalization using System Identification (EQSID). Moreover, the performance of the ICA-based equalizer is shown to be unaffected by channel type (minimum phase or nun-min phase).
