Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation attempts to think through the idea of technology as a perpetually inventive material means of relation in the specific domain of film and media studies and draws from a broad collection of thinkers inspired by Gilbert Simondon's insightful views on technology. Each chapter considers the relational aspects of technological media through analyses of a disparate collection of film and media objects. Each seemingly divergent topic affords the opportunity to consider the relation between a mode of visual capture (filmic or digital) and a variety of other technologies: microscopes in creationist documentaries, special effects in science fiction cinema, automotive vehicles in Iranian cinema, and interactive gadgets in political news coverage. By examining those moments when visual media encounter and interact with such technical devices or systems, we can better appreciate the underlying techno-logics produced and reproduced in these moments of intersection.
