Abstract/Summary:
This interpretive study used a basic qualitative methodology to explore the phenomenon of taking an idea from inception to implementation. Thirteen participants, representing ten incidents of moving from ideation to fruition, were examined. A basic qualitative methodology allowed for identification of patterns and understanding a process from the perspective of the participants (Merriam, 1998). Data were gathered through multiple methods and analyzed using a constant comparative method. After reoccurring patterns were identified, the following themes emerged: Theme 1: Implementing the Idea was the Realization of the Vision; Theme 2: Engaging Others in Pursuit of the Vision; Theme 3: Modifying Processes and Plans to Achieve the Vision; Theme 4: Believing in Possibilities for the Vision; Theme 5: Reflecting Positively on the Experience of Achieving the Vision.; OD practitioners may find the themes of this study provide insights about the actual process used by individuals who brought ideas to fruition, which can help define successful processes and the necessary characteristics for those desiring to realize a vision.; The findings were generally consistent with the relevant literature in the topics reviewed---creativity, entrepreneurship, motivation and change. They supported that vision is a powerful motivator as posited by Senge (1990), Snyder & Graves (1994) and Daniels (1994) and that seeking to help others can motivate action (Lawrence & Nohria, 2002). Inconsistent with assertions that entrepreneurs needed to be prepared in terms of lifestyle and resources in order to pursue their interests (Lesonsky, 1998), several participants had limited resources and their life style required they devote time and energy to things other than the pursuit of this idea. This study suggested that those who desire to realize a vision need not be overly concerned about their current resources but rather focus on their capacity for flexibility, tenacity, resourcefulness, and commitment.
