Abstract/Summary:
This study attempted to define current topics that family court judges in America felt they needed training in to assist them in making well-informed custodial decisions. Participants included were family court judges, commissioners and referees recruited through the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Participants completed a survey indicating their level of interest in different areas of training. Areas in which judicial officers expressed more interest were alienation and alignment of children, allegations of sexual abuse and developmental issues in custodial proceedings. Areas in which judicial officers were less interested were cultural diversity, issues related to domestic violence and gay and lesbian parenting. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.
