The effective communication of visual information plays a key role in museum operation.With the constant increase of the number of museums in China in recent years,the improvement of the communication of museums has become an important issue.Further studies are needed about how museums apply modern technology and new media to expand communication channels,how museums make use of the communication of visual information to improve communication efficiency and achieve communication effect,and how museums employ effective strategies to improve the visual literacy and aesthetic judgement of the audience.The study focuses on the dissemination of museum visual information and draws on theories regarding visual information communication and cultural analysis from interdisciplinary perspectives.To be specific,the theoretical framework combines classical communication theory,such as Malezk Modeland pseudo-environment.This study attempts to construct the visual field of museums and explore the principles of visual information dissemination.The basic path is to summarize the unity of the material and the virtual,the static and the dynamic,and phenomena and representations of the visual field,and examine the influence factors of the visual field,with the composition and characteristics of various visual elements,encoding and decoding methods and dissemination modes of visual information as starting points.This study puts forward proposals on how to improve the effect of visual information dissemination in museums by constructing visual field.Composed of various elements,the visual field is where the cultural structure,the visual subject and the audience infiltrate and interact with one other.Besides,the social environment and the audience's psychological space also constitute a part of the museum visual field.The expression of the audience's psychological space relies on the construction of the mechanical field of visual space.This research is based on an extensive collection of data and other materials through field studies in museums and interviews with audience,museum directors,curators,managers,volunteers,and audience at home and abroad.Derived from these data,the research aims to depict a realistic picture of visual information of the museum from the visual environment,visual information presentation,visual narrative,media social environment,and comprehensive analysis of audience perception.In the age of media convergence,the principle of "visual priority" is further determined under the "audience-centered" new museum belief.This study integrates theory and practice to explore the construction of the visual environment in museums,the visual communication strategy and the internal and external media composition.The internal logic of this research is as follows.Firstly,it clarifies the definition of the visual information in museums,namely,concept analysis,elements,media characteristics,coding method and decoding path.Secondly,it explains the necessity and the value of the dissemination of museum information.Afterwards,empirical research is used to find out the influence factors of visual information dissemination.Finally,it puts forward the Information Transmission Model of Museum Visual Field from the perspective of Malezk Model.It is found in this study that "audience-centered theory" integrates the public into the established structure of museums,and the rise of new museology directly shifts the focus of museums from "objects" to "people".The innovation of museums focuses on responding to the current public demands and establishing the correlation between the internal and the external of museums.The influence of the audience on the construction of the visual field is manifested in the following aspects:the evolution of the communication form of the museum visual field is closely related to the evolution process of the audience' s behavior,and the two sides promote and influence each other.In order to meet the increasingly diverse needs of the public,museums should form a relationship of integration,interaction,co-existence and internal development with audiences.From observation to interaction and to immersion,the audience get more and more involved in "participation","experience"and "sharing" The development of the museum pays more attention to the participation of the audience in the whole communication activities,and the communication forms will be more virtual,technological and scene-based.The museum visual field has been transformed into a multi-dimensional field where the scene enriches the public experienceSpecifically,this research consists of 8 chapters,including introduction,theoretical framework,the value of visual information communication,influence factors,construction of material field and virtual field,and conclusionThe first chapter explicates the definition and core concepts.It is based on the theory of visual culture,communication theory and agenda setting theory.It analyzes how the museum,as a means of mass media,conducts the encoding method and decoding path.According to mass communication theory,it constructs the basic mode of visual information disseminationThe second chapter discusses the value of museum visual information dissemination and the purpose of museum communication.The model of"Cognition-Emotion-Skills Three-dimensional Literacy Cultivation" of the museum audience is built.In this model,audience become active constructors of the meaning The cultural literacy,visual literacy and media skills of the audiences also have an impact on the communication effect.And the dissemination of visual information will help audience to enhance cultural confidence and strengthen cultural identity.The third chapter analyzes the visual information presentation and interpretation of exhibits and focuses on the different types of museum exhibits in different periods This study tries to interpret the construction of museum visual field,the formation of visual order,various sensual experience strategies,artistic synaesthesia,interactive visual communication,and volunteer interpersonal communication in internal communication environment.It then elaborates how these aspects guide the audience in visual experience and meaning interpretationThe fourth chapter takes the most common forms of exhibition as examples,such as regional cultural exhibitions and international exhibitions,to explore the visual rhetoric of the visual form,contents of the exhibition,the visual metaphor,and the visual narrative,and to explain how to disseminate theme of the exhibition effectively on the spiritual plane and how to enhance mutual learning and appreciation among civilizations through exhibitions of multicultural narrative.The fifth chapter analyzes the visual art and cultural presentation of museums from the virtual environment,media mode,influence of digital form of museums on visual information dissemination,and the reconstruction of information by TV,and in the meanwhile,explores the internal and external communication modes and digital communication strategies.Various media platforms,social institutions and museums can work together to build a cross-media museum cultural narrative to achieve the diverse dissemination of museum visual information.The sixth chapter is empirical research which analyzes the factors influencing the communication of museum visual information.From the perspective of media sociology,the museum can be seen as a social system which is established by the visitor in the museum.Thus the visitor acquire a new social identity,and form a social relationship with other elements of the museum.Based on this idea,this study uses the grounded theory and social network analysis to obtain qualitative materials from field trips in order to reveal the defects in the visual information transmission and analyze reasons.Among the main influence factors are communication environment and visual order,exhibit presentation and information interpretation,diverse narrative of exhibition,and media application and expansion.The seventh chapter is the conclusion and outlook,which constructs an integrated model of the museum visual information dissemination,and at the same time points out strategies of the visual information dissemination inside and outside the museum.Traditionally,the functions of museums focus mainly on the collection and protection of cultural relics and treasures in order to preserve culture and display it to a restricted audience,and for a small number of scholars to do research on.With the prosperity of culture and art and the increasing urbanization in the past decades in China,museums have come to serve composite functions,and among them the functions in mass communication and public cultural services have been enhanced.It will become a tendency that museums will function as a public center for cultural production,interpretation,communication and experience and to be embedded in the urban cultural system and the popular social network.Affected by the development of Internet and technology,there will appear more communication modes combining physical and virtual museums.Mass communication offers museums wider communication path and scope and media convergence provides new ways for museums to interpret and display their collections.Innovation in means of exhibition,reorganization of resources,cross-border integration and visual information communication will all contribute to the cultural inheritance and dissemination in museums.
