The prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty are defined as the prose anthologies selected by the Ming people after the first year of Hongzhi. In the middle and late Ming Dynasty, the literary schools began to have their own tenets,Yangming Xinxue became one of the important ideological resources in this period, combined with Buddhist and Taoist thought,it impacted the Neo-Confucianism of Cheng-Zhu,as well as Confucius and Mengzi. With the increasing popularity of culture in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, the publishing industry flourished, and many anthologies of prose were printed, which were not looked on as literature books. These prose anthologies exhibited some new features. In this setting, the prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty present a different appearance from the selected prose of other times, reflecting the confrontation of new ideas, and becoming the connection of new types of relationships. In the past, the studies of prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty emphasized the study of selected texts in the Tang and Song dynasties, but they ignored selected texts from the Qin and Han dynasties;they used to look on Yangming Xinxue as the background, but they didn't study more deeply;therefore, the studies of prose anthologies as a material attribute needs to be paid more attention to.Therefore, this article attempts to deepen the study of selected essays in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. At the same time, this article also introduces the perspective of the Siku Quanshu Catalogue,as well as observes the official attitude of the Qing Dynasty regarding the prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. The full text is divided into five chapters:The first chapter takes “Essays of Qin and Han Dynasties” and “Eight Famous Litterateurs in the Tang and Song Dynasties” as a sample, and discusses the dispute between the Qin-Han School and the Tang-Song School from the angles of “Tao” and “Rules of Literature.” The Siku Quanshu Catalogue thinks that the “Rules of Literature” theory of the Tang and Song schools is more desirable and worthy to be emulated. It is believed that the “Rules of Literature” theory of the Qin and Han schools is the model of grammar. The second chapter discusses that under the background of the rise of Yangming Xinxue, the literary thought of self-appreciation rises up.In the middle and late Ming Dynasty,a large number of members of the middle-and lower-class became authors, attempting to express themselves. In this way, they expressed their discontent toward traditions and authorities. The idea of “cultural entertainment” advocates pure aesthetic and self-esteem,which is the dispelling of the theory of “Tao”.The Siku Quanshu Catalogue is based on the Confucian view of literature. The prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty were disparaged. In the third chapter,on the basis of the prosperity of the publishing industry, some new changes in the prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty are discussed, which are manifested in the weakening of literariness and the enhancement of practicality. This chapter is divided into three aspects: First,we look at the prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty as a commodity. The production and circulation of anthologies linked the booksellers, editors and other middle and lower level literati, including their activities around the compilation and selection of books. As a commodity, selection of anthology content aimed at catering to the market resulted in poor quality control.Second, the prose anthologies collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, reflect the common people's demand for knowledge in the cultural atmosphere of this period. The anthologies of this kind of prose attach great importance to the literary theory of “pragmatism”,and pays attention to the form and system to increase clarity of position and ease of checking.Third, during the Ming and mid-Ming dynasties, officials often regarded books as “zhi”,known as “Shupa books”.and their editing was often perfunctory. The fourth chapter discusses the origin and evolution of the prose collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, and discusses the control of the selected texts of the Ming Dynasty by the Siku Quanshu. From Wang Zhijian's “Model of Scripture and Righteousness” and other articles,it can be seen that the Song Dynasty is the predecessor of the Ming Dynasty, and during the evolution from the Song Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, the style underwent changes during the Southern Song Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty. In the late Ming Dynasty, the text presented the characteristics of “focusing on skills and refining” and so on.Therefore,“Siku Quanshu” marked Qianlong's imperial selection of “Qin Ding Si Shu Wen”,and advocated the “pure classical” style to identify the scholars of the Qing Dynasty. In the late Ming Dynasty,it was especially taboo for the rulers of the Qing Dynasty to choose the right to vote. Therefore, the Siku Quanshu gave up all the selected texts of the Ming Dynasty series rather than select them, and only published the four Books of the Qing Dynasty, which strengthened the control over the style of the national examination.Chapter five summarizes the views of the selected essays collected in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. The summary holds that,in terms of literature, the lack of study by the Ming people led to a large number of mistakes in the evaluation of the selection of the essays compiled in the middle and late Ming dynasties. The study is not clear, the compilation cannot wait for malaise. In literature, the prose anthologies in the middle and late Ming Dynasty have the problem of being frivolous, shallow and flaunting.
