A Study Of Penta-syllabic Poetic Diction From Southern Dynasties To Tang Dynasty

Poetic diction which is a concept of Chinese conditional poetics theory has been ignored by scholars for a long period of time,because of the unwell-documented records.The records on the concept of the poetic diction focus on these two pieces of material in existing literature.One is the story that Wang Anshi changed two characters' places of a stave.And the other is that Li Dongyang considered a stave as poetic diction.According to these two pieces of material in existing literature,the concept of poetic diction should be defined like this:the poetic diction is the stave whose artistry grow out of the sequence of characters and words and the sentence structure,without considering of the semantic representation.The categories are nearly homologous of poetic diction and other concepts of Chinese conditional poetics theory,like character and word,sentence structure,rhetoric,style,the meaning beyond the words,impression,etc.However,the concept of poetic diction is directed to the artistry under the influence of sequence of characters and words and sentence structure.So,the study of the poetic diction is a study on how the“character and style","implication and excellence","essence and verve","nature and instinct" of the whole stave has been exhibited by sequencing the characters and choosing the sentence structure,which are common concepts and topics of Chinese conditional poetics theory.Though the concept of poetic diction can be defined by the unwell-documented records.The definition of the poetic diction is only about the categories and directions of this concept.In another word,it is not a concrete definition.To define the concrete concept of poetic diction,the common characteristics of excellent staves' sequences of characters and words and the sentence structure should be analyzed and summarized.The penta-syllabic stave from Southern Dynasties to Tang Dynasty is indivisible,which is always considered as a whole.During this period of time,there are many excellent staves whose characteristics are different from the penta-syllabic staves of Wei and Jin Dynasties and can contain all the changes of the penta-syllabic staves from Song Dynasty to Qing Dynasty.And the penta-syllabic staves of this period of time can match the categories of the poetic diction s two aspects,the sequence of characters,and words and the sentence structure.So,in this dissertation the concept of poetic diction is divided into two aspects,the Sequence of Poetic Diction about the influence of characters' sequences on the artistry of the whole stave,and theStructure of Poetic Diction about the influence of sentence structure on the artistry of the whole stave.And the concrete definition of the poetic diction should be brought by analyzing the excellent staves from Southern Dynasties to Tang Dynasty and summarizing the common characteristics of their sequences of characters and words and the sentence structure.In Chapter One,the main subject to analyze and summarize is the common characteristic of the characters' sequence of the excellent staves from Southern Dynasties to Tang Dynasty and their influence on the artistry.Elliptical and inverted phenomena should be analyzed by generalizing the semantic consistency which is broken by the special sequences of characters and the distances of temporal,spatial,or logical relations.Finally,the common characteristics of the sequences of characters and words can be summarized,and they can be considered as the definition of the Sequence of Poetic Diction.In Chapter Two,the main subject is the Common Structures which have been most acceptable and generalized in many ancient books.Five kinds of Common Structures and the coordination between the sentence structures and their rhytlun should be analyze and summarize in this chapter.And the coordinated ones can be considered as the Structure of Poetic Diction.In Chapter Three,the main subject is the View of Poetic Diction which is the methodology of poetry analyzing,generalized by the conclusions of Chapter One and Chapter Two.The concrete analytic methods of the View of Poetic Diction and its main categories are shown by analyzing nine penta-syllabic staves from Southern Dynasties to Tang Dynasty and two heptasyllabic staves during this period of time,in the chapter.And the strong and weak points of the View of Poetic Diction are generalized by comparing with the characteristics of the ancient and modern methodologies of poetry analyzing,at same time.
