Since the birth of the United States of America, the cultural diplomacy strategy that maintained and maximized the national interests of America had always been an essential part of the overall cultural diplomacy of the American government before and during the Cold War,after which America has been interpreting it as a means of consolidating and expanding its hegemony across the world through the strengthening of cultural diplomacy with those major countries and regions globally.China, one significant target of the U.S.cultural diplomacy, has been gaining greater and greater attention from the U.S.government,for which a wide range of factors are supposed to take account:a variety of theories have mushroomed after the Cold War,America's evaluation of the international political situation, global development trends, and China's development condition,to name just a few.No matter what, the U.S.cultural diplomacy toward China after the Cold War holistically aims at its practical political, economic and cultural interests in China,as well as strategically transforming China institutionally. The underlying diplomatic end is to seek hegemony in China and make China's national strategy and foreign policies serve America's interests by the export of American values and ideology to China. As the implementation of this policy goes on,the U.S.cultural diplomacy toward China has exerted positive effects on both China and America themselves, and the Sino-American relationship;yet its overt hegemonic touch and political conspiracy of westernizing China are undermining China's national security and challenging the beneficial interactions between the two countries.Hence, dialectic approaches would best be utilized to evaluate the effects of the U.S.cultural diplomacy toward China:it ought to include a firm rejection of imperialism while positive elements in it should be retained so as to serve the development of our country and society.Alongside the reaction against the impact brought about by the U.S.cultural diplomacy toward China,it is advisable for us,first and foremost,to be sober-minded and cautious, and a fortiori,to exalt China's soft power, which in turn will expand our cultural influence and ultimately defend our cultural sovereignty.Only through this can China resist effectively the cultural invasion from the U.S.and gain its initiative in the cultural interactions between China and America.
