The theory system of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)was established by the Huangdi's Inner Canon of Medicine and was developed and enriched continuously by the TCM practitioners during the following dynasties. Therefore, many new academic thoughts and schools were generated, including Xin'an medicine. This kind of medicine was originated in the ancient Huizhou area of Xin'an river valley, with rich cultural background and profound historical influence.Consolidating Basis and Cultivating Primordial Qi(CBCPQ)is the most representative theory in Xin'an medicine. However,in previous studies on the integrity of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine, the connotation and significance of the concept of CBCPQ were often neglected. Therefore, our research further explored CBCPQ theory from the academic point of view in order to get a better understanding of the connotation of the CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine,to clarify its basic development path,to highlight its academic characteristics and clinical application value, thus further enriching the research contents of Xin'an medicine, providing a theoretical foundation for the clinical and experimental research of CBCPQ theory, providing a reference for the characteristic theories and schools of TCM,and inspiring new approaches for the clinical diagnosis and the treatment of deficiency diseases and complicated diseases. This research mainly adopted the literature analysis method, the comparison research method, the historical research method, the annotation method and other related methods.Literature search was performed from the databases of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Library,Chinese Medicine Classics Knowledge Mining and Dissemination Platform,Chinese Medical Classics,CNKI,Wanfang and VIP.Li Gao,Zhu Zhenheng,Wang Ji,Xue Ji,Xu Chunfu,Sun Yikui,Zhang Jiebin,Wu Kun,Luo Zhouyan,Wu Cheng and others were selected as the main subjects of the study.Through vertical carding and horizontal analysis, our study was conducted combined with the research results of contemporary scholars, aiming at the following four parts. The first part was the study of the connotation of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine.First of all,it combs the inheritance and origin of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine and the origin of the name CBCPQ.And then we mainly expounded the concept, core, scope of application and key points of differentiation of symptoms and signs, the law of prescriptions and medicines, and the differences and relations with warming and tonic thought in Zhejiang medicine. Our study showed that the Xin 'an CBCPQ thought described a process of supporting the healthy and dispelling the pathogenic factors, with the methods of tonifying the spleen and kidney, protecting the Primordial Qi,and strengthening the foundation of human body, such as essence,qi and spirit. The core was to cultivate and protect the vitality of the human body,to stimulate the original power of human life activities and emphasizing the role of their own vital qi.The Primordial Qi originates from nature. It integrates qi,substance and essence and has the nature of creating at the very beginning, therefore it is named the Essential Qi,which can be considered as " the Taiji of the human body".The Primordial Qi can be replenished by regulating the spleen and kidney, and constitute the healthy factors of human body with the qi derives from food and water. This method was applicable for the prevention and treatment of the external infections, internal injuries, epidemic diseases, surgical diseases, gynecological diseases, and paediatric diseases. The main points of syndrome differentiation were deficiency-loss symptom. The characteristics of prescriptions were commonly using of Ginseng, regulating both qi and blood, tonifying the spleen and kidney, careful application of strong drugs to eliminate pathogenic factors, paying attention to the use of different drugs with function of monarch, minister, assistant or guide.Their academic views were different from those of the warming and tonic school in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and they also influenced each other in the formation of their academic thoughts.Among them,CBCPQ theory emphasizes "Yin and Yang belong to Tai Chi",while the warming and tonic School in Jiangsu and Zhejiang emphasizes " Tai Chi divides into Yin and Yang " and the mutual use of Yin and YangThe second part was about the academic foundation of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine, which included the medical foundation and the philosophical foundation.Originated from Huangi's Inner Canon of Medicine, the CBCPQ theory stated the concepts of true qi,healthy qi,spleen, stomach, kidney and essence, and put forward the thoughts of supporting the healthy and dispelling the pathogenic factors. The exposition of the concepts of"gate of life" and "vital qi between kidney" in the book of Difficult Classic provided the theoretical basis for the relevant idea of CBCPQ theory.Li Gao proposed that the vital qi of the spleen and stomach enriched the Primordial Qi,and that deficiency of spleen and stomach led to various diseases. These thoughts provided the basis for the formation of the core connotation of CBCPQ theory.Zhu Zhenheng's theory of "excessive of Yang and deficiency of Yin" became the breakthrough point of Wang Ji's thought of CBCPQ theory. In the Song and Ming Dynasties,Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism's outlook on the universe and thought of studying were its philosophical motive force, and Taoism, and inner alchemy thought were its cultural root. The third part was the formative factors of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine. The first factor was related with the medical background.Doctors stated to pay attention to correcting the abuse of nourishing Yin and reducing fire, and the deficiency of the spleen and stomach became the main symptom commonly seen in the clinical practice. The second factor was related with the natural environment. The topograph of Huizhou was relatively closed and independent, which is in the region of mountains and water with barren land, and rich in genuine medicinal materials. The third factor was related with the social environment. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the clan household registration system in Huizhou was strict and the economy of Huizhou merchants was prosperous. The fourth factor was related with ideology and culture. The rulers of the Ming Dynasty respected Taoism and practiced alchemy in the Confucian atmosphere of "If not a good minister, then a good doctor".The fourth part was the formation and evolution of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine. It can be divided into the following three periods:The formation period of Wang Ji's idea of"Spleen and Stomach-Ying and Wei-Primordial Qi-Supporting the Healthy and Dispelling the Pathogenic Factors",the mature period of Sun Yikui's idea of "Spleen and Kidney-Gate of Life(the Primordial Qi)-Supporting the Healthy and Dispelling the Pathogenic Factors",and the period of succession and development of Xin'an physicians after Sun Yikui.Based on the above findings, this study holded that Wang Ji and Sun Yikui and other famous Xin'an doctors put forward the CBCPQ theory based on the combination of TCM classic theories in Huangdi's Inner Canon of Medicine and in Difficult Classic, philosophical thoughts of Confucianism,Taoism, and Buddhism,as well as the medical claims of famous doctors(e.g.,Li Gao and Zhu Zhenheng). The CBCPQ theory introspected and criticized the malpractice of sticking to the theory of nourishing yin and reducing fire and abusing the products of bitter cold and reducing diarrhea, and then puts forward innovative treatment ideas with regional characteristics based on its own clinical practice. The Primordial Qi was the emphasis of the CBCPQ theory.Wang Ji and Sun Yikui are the key doctors during the formation and development of CBCPQ theory in Xin'an medicine.Zhu Zhenheng's theory of"excessive of Yang and deficiency of Yin" was the breakthrough point of Wang Ji's thoughts.Because of that,he raised the thoughts of "Ying and Wei is the same qi" and "the use of Ginseng and astragalus to supplement",which played a vital role in the birth of CBCPQ theory. The emergence of CBCPQ theory not only reflected the inheritance of classical theory, but also met the development and innovation of the times. In the study of the characteristic theory of TCM,the emergence of new academic viewpoints and theories is the result of the development based on the classic innovation.Studies of TCM theory schools should pay attention to the elucidation of their academic propositions and focus on the essence.it should neither not be fixed, nor exaggerated and generalized on the connotation and application. The study of CBCPQ theory has certain reference significance for perfecting Xin'an medicine research, exploring the inheritance relationship between classics and schools, and the formation and development law of schools and distinctive theories of TCM.The core proposition of protecting the human body and supporting the body to dispel pathogenic factors is in line with the development trend of future medicine.Further studies could carry out basic research that returns to the classics of TCM with a view to solving clinical needs, and could adopt modern medical concepts and diagnostic techniques, with the characteristics of the contemporary population,to expand the application of the core concept of CBCPQ theory.
