The Study Of The Esthetic Elements In The Lower Face And The Related Factors Of The Judgements,Based On The Chinese Population

ObjectiveThe aims of this study were to explore the esthetic judgements on the elements of the lower third face from the people with and without plastic treatment needs,and compare the difference between the two kinds of population.Besides,determining whether the natural and social qualities of the people involved had influence on their esthetic tastes was also important.We hoped to provide data for clinical treatment through knowing better about the esthetic tendency of both the patients and the people close to them.MethodsThe study used Photoshop software to change the morphological structures and ratio of some parts of the lower face through altering the angles or linear distances,based on the three-dimensional photos of the females who were aged 20-29 years old,with normal BMI and face structure,no plastic surgery or maxillofacial surgery history,no injection history during the past year.We designed and delivered the questionaires,aiming to investigate the demographic characteristics of the population with and without plastic treatment needs(age,sex,birth place,educational background,monthly income and monthly expenses included),plastic surgery experience or plan,and their attitudes towards the photos after edit.The objects included the patients in the plastic surgery clinic of Peking Union Medical College Hospital,and general population without the related experience or wills.One-way Analysis of Variance was used to analyze the relationship between their demographic characteristics and the esthetic tastes,and independent t-test was carried out to compare the aesthetic tendencies between the two kinds of population.ResultsThe population with and without plastic treatment needs had a coincident esthetic tendency in most results,most of whom found the included angle of the line linking pronasale and stomion,and the line linking stomion and pogonion with value of 175°,upper to lower lip ratio with value of 1:1,and Physiognomic facial index with value of 1.6 to be optimal.There were significant differences in their judgements on the mandibular angle and the ratio of chin length and philtrum length(P<0.05).People with plastic surgery needs showed more favor on mandibular angle of 150° than the other population,while the latter preferred the ratio of chin length and philtrum length with value of 1.6.The demographic characteristics could influence the attitude towards plastic treatment and the taste of people significantly.ConclusionsElementary survey on the Chinese people's esthetic judgements of the morphological structures and ratios of lower face was carried out,the results showed the difference between population of different classifications and with different attitudes towards plastic surgery.The results could be helpful in grasping the aesthetic tendency of national people and determining the treatment plan.
