Abstract/Summary:
The interface of urban public space is not only an important part of urban public space, but also a key channel through which buildings play a role in contributing to the construction of urban public space. In exterior, the interface is a overlapping plane lying between urban public space and contructional private space.Actually, the way it is formed shows how urban design and building design are integrated.Former studies on urban public space interface design views the interface independently, mainly from macroscopic and meso-scopic perspectives with a top-down approach. However, the author of this paper tends to view it as a starting point for exploring the mutual interaction between a city and its buildings. This study, based on the definition and multiple connotations of urban public space interface, aims to explore a design method that makes it possible for individual buildings to adapt to and contributing to urban environment.Urban public space interface and the overall environment not only need proper regulation and guidance from above, but also need response and development from below.Against the trend of rapid individual economic development and frequent social activities,it is only when the two walk together hand in hand that an organic, diversified and long-lasting system can be established. This study firstly decides on an “adaption” design after a review of former theories on urban design and building design. The “adaption” design is not a negation of the traditional counterpart, but a bridge linking building design with urban design. It means that individual buildings, given the actual conditions, must be in harmony with the overall environment without sacrificing its own design concepts and play a conducive role in the whole picture through adjustment in design strategies and design resources. We say an individual building is “adaptive” to its surroundings when it conveys its own design concepts and is connected to its environment at the same time.Secondly, this study discusses the common difficulties confronting the “adaption” design in the context of how urban public space interface is created.Based on the above discussion, the study suggests a series of “adaption” design models for professional builders which are problem-solving-oriented and in line with standards for individual building design, hence establishing a bridge connecting value orientation on the macro level to design method on the micro level.Lastly, the study sheds light on the application mechanism of these design models on the basis of substantial studies of actual cases. To be specific, these design models will contribute to the optimization of both the urban public space and its interface through different choices in design strategies and methods.
