Most Vietnamese Chinese reside in the South areas of Vietnam. They are mostly around the Sai Gon and Cho Lon areas. The Vietnamese Chinese Press was also established and blossomed in these areas. The Vietnamese Chinese Press has been around for hundreds of years.According to historical material, the press was the first Chinese publication in the country and the entire IndoChina Peninsula. The publication was established in 1918 under the name of "Nhat Bao Nam Ky".In the 1960' s and 1970' s,the publication was among the best Chinese publications in the South East Asia region. The level of press quality came in second in Asia after Hong Kong and Taiwan. On April 30,1975,the national liberation forced all Chinese publications to close down.Since then, there is also one Chinese publication left, which is the "Sai Gon Giai Phong Hoa Van" now. From 1918 to 1975,the Vietnamese Chinese Press has undergone many obstacles.Despite its glorious day,the publication became a part of history. This dissertation explores the reasons behind the transformation of the publication from a pure commercial corporation to a propaganda tool of the Vietnamese communist party and the information center of the government and citizens. The first chapter will be the analysis on the milestones and hardships during the establishment for 57 year. The milestones will be illustrated in three phases, which include the beginning, and middle and the recent. There are different key hardships in every phase. In these 57 years, the publication saw some growth and achievements but was always struggling to survive. The Vietnamese Chinese Press have been through several transformations and faced tough challenges in the process. After analyzing the historical background, the current situation of the Vietnamese Chinese Press will be investigated, with discussion on how the Vietnamese government has controlled the publication and how this situation has brought influence to the publication, the Chinese education and the Chinese community. How the publication has overcame the challenges of new media habits are also among the discussion. The current existence and future development are also thoroughly discussed with recommendations.Hopefully, this dissertation will serve as significant reference for developing future growth for the Vietnamese Chinese Press. The Vietnamese Chinese Press is the dissertation key research subject for my doctorate graduation thesis. It is also the main keyword for the entire dissertation. As the publication is a medium based on ethnicity, most Vietnamese Chinese, especially those of first generation Chinese have high credibility towards local mainstream media.Hence,Chinese publications in Vietnam are still a huge target potential in the market.
