The 17 Years,started with the establishment of the PRC in 1949 and ended by the outbreak of the Great Cultural Revolution in 1966,is a special period in the history of the PRC.Propaganda posters are an important modern propaganda tool and media.The 17 Years experienced a major development of Chinese posters.This paper reconstructs the emergence and evolution of the 17 Years propaganda posters from culture and representation perspectives.Three pairs of contradicting forces affected the development of the propaganda posters in the 17 Years are proposed,which includes the internationalization and nationalization,urbanization and ruralization,and public interest and ideology.This paper consists of four chapters.Chapter 1,The Rise of the Propaganda Posters.This chapter reviews the status of propaganda poster before the founding of the PRC,followed by analyzing the unfold of the movement of the new Chinese New Year Pictures,and research its characteristics of propaganda and customs.The chapter also discusses the propaganda needs for the Resisting U.S.and Aiding North Korea Movement that has led to the rise of propaganda posters in the PRC.Chapter 2,The Development of the Propaganda Posters.This chapter opens with the introduction of Soviet and Polish posters to China and their influences on the ideas and creation of Chinese posters.It illustrates the bifurcation in functionality and diversity in content during period of the first five-year plan.The influence of private publishers on public interest is also discussed.Chapter 3,The Transition of the Propaganda Posters.Divided into two parts,this chapter mainly analyzes the double shifts of content and form of the propaganda posters during the Great Leap Forward.The first part introduces how the posters propagated the Great Leap Forward.The second part introduces the propaganda posters’ publishing industry in the Great Leap Forward.Chapter 4,The Interruption and Transition of the Propaganda Posters.This chapter is divided into two parts.The first part covers the stagnation of propaganda posters between 1961-1963.The second part presents the transition to the "the Great Cultural Revolution " style between 1964-1965.
