An Investigation Of Women Characters In Propaganda Posters Of The 1980s

Propaganda poster,a unique form of painting,is highly practical in terms of artistic expression due to its clear and concise style.The content of propaganda poster is an important source of reflecting the ideology,e.g.the aesthetic and social values,of a specific period of history.The development of propaganda poster art is associated with the social reality of the historic period which it belongs to,among them,the cultures and political policies have dominated effects on the growth of propaganda poster art.A common way artists used to express their thoughts and emotions is describing women in their works.In the 1980 s,women in China played increasingly important roles in fields of politics,societies and families due to the success of China's reform and opening up.Meanwhile,more education women could receive changed their consumption attitudes and aesthetic tastes.Correspondingly,those changes happening to women also influenced the consumption tendency of the whole China's society.Hence,the propaganda posters created in the 1980 s of China with themes of women have a significant promoting effect on China's efforts to build a diversified society.However,these propaganda poster works have not been well studied so far.The present thesis gives an in-depth study of the women themed propaganda posters which were formed in the 1980 s of China.A thorough discussion is first made on the diversities of women characters exhibited in these propaganda posters.By analysing the artistic characteristics of the women defined in these works,the thesis also investigates what construction and expression methods these propaganda posters applied in describing 1980s' Chinese women.Moreover,a summary is made on the aesthetic,historic characteristic and social development status of the 1980s' China by concerning the backgrounds behind these propaganda posters.It concludes that the propaganda posters created in the 1980 s of China well records the new images that Chinese women displayed in the 1980 s.Meanwhile,these propaganda posters promote the spreading of the new zeitgeist of the 1980 s and accelerate the growth of China's social civilization.
