| Historical architectures as cultural heritages are important material remains to understand the local historical context.Therefore,the study of architecture and culture of vernacular dwellings is significant not only in architecture but also in urban history and social cultural areas.Changzhou is an ancient city with more than 2500 years history,and well known for many famed persons in Ming and Qing dynasties.Therefore,this thesis takes thevernacular dwellingsheritages in Changzhou during Ming and Qing dynasties as the main research object,and chooses the local gentry class as the entry point of the research.This study aiming to regard thevernacular dwellings as the materialization of the regional social culture and to explore its structure character,cultural background and influnce.The full text contain eight chapters and can be divided into three parts.The first part consists of the first three chapters.First of all,the introduction poses a hypothesis that "the gentry class influence the Changzhou dwellings in Ming and Qing dynasties" in the light ofelitism in art.The second and third chapters based on the historical perspectives of urban history and literary geography textual studied overall style of Changzhou City,the characteristics of the gentry class,the composition and the mainstream cultural in Ming and Qing dynasties.Four conditions have been extracted and verified: The population base of gentry class(Stratum);Gentry ’s Position in the Local Cause of Ming and Qing Dynasties(Space);The practical influence of the gentry class(Ability);the will and the theoretical system(Theory).Chapter 4 to Chapter 7,which belong to the second part,are parallel chapters and focus on the material object under the premise that the subject hypothesis is basically established.Based on the survey,investigation and analysis of the Changzhou dwellings and residential records,comparing the heritagessituation in orther areas in Jiangnan,these paragraphs record the characters of Changzhou dwellings: Distribution(Chapter 4),the Plane and the Section(Chapter 5),Building Materials(Chapter 6),Zhuang-zhe and Decoration(Chapter 7).At the same time,the main hypothesis were confirmed with the social background analysis and deduction,especially on the gentry class factor.The third part include Chapter 8.It puts forward the ways and means of the gentry class impact of Changzhou dwellings in Ming and Qing dynasties on the macro,medium and micro aspects and concludes that it is a regional diffusion model through the cultural indoctrination and material guarantee.This thesis points out the influence of the gentry class on the traditional architecture of Changzhou and reveals the causes and the process through systematical study of the traditional architecture and cultural background of Changzhou.The work promotes depth of residential research in Jiangnan area and completes the system of Chinese residential building research.At the same time,the studyprovides experiences for similar architectural studies anda useful reference for other traditional cultural studies. |
