| The Chinese vernacular dwelling architecture is constituted by elements that are inspiring to contemporary architectural practice. Passive design strategies exhibited in Chinese vernacular dwelling architecture are in agreement with scientifically validated modern technologies and processes. More and more architects in China attempt to inherit these positive elements of the Chinese vernacular dwelling architecture in the contemporary architectural practice. This study intends to make contribution to this movement.Tri-Wu Memorial Museum is built in memory of Wu Zuoren, Wu Yuru and Wu Zuxiang. The design intent is to employ the principles of the HUI architecture through an innovative process. Of essential importance is to thoroughly understand the method and process of inheriting the HUI architecture in contemporary architectural design practice. A major challenge is to represent the cultural elements of the HUI architecture in contemporary architecture.Firstly, the thesis analyzes the history and cultural elements of the HUI architecture with a focus on the texture and contents of the HUI architecture, it's spatial organization, and it's architectural typology. Secondly, these ideas are further studied and piloted in the design process of the Tri-Wu Memorial Museum. The experience of this project is analyzed to develop design guidance. |
