A Study On The Everyday Urban Public Space

Urban public space is an important supporter of urban life,and also the most important place to embody the values of a city which is freedom,democracy and tolerance.Urban public space can help people escape from the structured high density everyday life by giving them a place to get together,spending their social life and leisure time,or joining a festival,defense,demonstrations or other activities.Under this understanding,the collective meaning in the public space has been e extremely stressed.So that the festival has become the most important activities happened in public spaces which excluded the everyday life activities.However,the everyday life is an important part of public life,no matter from the human needs or from Chinese tradition.Especially in the contemporary environment,the everyday life using it characteristics such as trivial,seemingly obvious but invisible and both everywhere and nowhere,forms its unique mode of circulation,and tactically fight againsts the erosion of public sphere which caused by capital developments.This thesis teasing out,clearing and perfecting the concept of urban public space by illustrates the background and characteristics of related public space research,combined with China’s actual and contemporary reality.Using the related everyday life theory,redefines the conception of everyday urban public space and its characteristics are summarized.Through the study of the formation mechanism,space characteristics and activities in the everyday urban public spaces in Hankou former concession area,summed up the feature of the everyday public space and the formation and evolution reasons.It also recommends some design strategy to the urban public space design according to the study of everyday urban public space and rethinking of current reality.This thesis includes two aspects of research:(1)Arrange and perfect the concept and theory of everyday urban public space.Through comparing the Chinese and Western "public" concept,sorting and analysing the development and its essential characteristics of some related concepts,such as "public domain","urban public space","everyday life",clarifies the concept of everyday urban public space.Theoretically demonstrates the theoretical value,significance and its characteristics of this concept,and then put forward the corresponding research methods and strategies.(2)Using Hankou former concession area as an example to study the characteristics of everyday urban public space.From the time and space two dimensions,through whole and typical everyday urban public space two levels,base on the actual behavior and activities,study the everyday urban public spaces in Hankou former concession area.In the time dimension,combe the development history of public space from the founding time,which help to reveal the detail of its occurrence and development,which also show its relationship with other urban elements.In the space dimension urban level,using the quantitative method to analyse the connection between everyday urban public space and urban built environment,in order to discuss the feature and form reason of the spatial distribution pattern of everyday urban public space in the research area.In specific spatial level,using four cases,carefully discuss the reason and the process of its development,special time and space feature and public practical meaning of each four typical spaces.And finally sum up the characteristics of the everyday urban public spaces and the main reasons which effect the formation and development of the everyday urban public spaces.
