After rapid urbanization,China’s urban space has gradually shifted from "incremental development" based on expansion to "stock optimization".Due to the previous top-down construction model, the physical space of urban buildings has been greatly expanded. There are a large number of fragmented public spaces in old city with high-density environment, which undermines the quality of public life for ordinary people. In addition, living environment has become an important issue in urban development. In their use of urban public space, people frequently carry out spontaneous spatial renewal based on their own needs, resulting in vibrant places rooted in everyday life. Therefore, renewal in the context of stock should be oriented by people’s living experience and promotes an urban development mechanism that guides design by everyday life. From the perspective of everyday urbanism, this paper focuses on the fragmented public spaces in old city.A case study is conducted on the fragmented public spaces of typical figure-ground relations in Shengfu Road Primary School area of the old city of Guiyang.Through literature review, case analysis, field research, and design practice,it probes into the source of vitality of the old city space by observing people’s everyday life and spontaneous renewal.Four holistic renewal design strategies are proposed,i.e.close to the everyday, conform to the everyday, trigger the everyday, and intermingle the everyday. In combination with fragmented public spaces of different figure-ground relations,i.e."enclosure","penetration" and "parallelism",targeted renewal design strategies are put forward,so as to explore feasible ways of fragmented public space renewal design. With everyday life as the main line, this study attempts to propose a new perspective for renewing fragmented public spaces in old city and enhancing urban vitality. |
