Overall, there are two types of public spaces for everyday life. The first type is urban public space, such as urban roads, squares, parks and others from a macro-level perspective. The other type concerns architectural public space, such as malls, restaurants, hotels, stations, office buildings, schools, and from a micro-level perspective. This type of public space is within or closely relates to public buildings. It is the subject in this research.Since its reform and opening-up 40 years ago,China has experienced fast economic and social development. With rapid urban construction, public buildings in China have seen a continuous increase both in variety and quantity, and the same is true of public spaces. This significantly extended the activity space for everyday life, work, and leisure. However, there are a number of issues encountered in the urban construction and public space development.Example of these issues include: mere pursuit of modernism, greater voice of strong capital without considering the requirements of the public during globalization, and the indulgent self-expression of architectural designers. The consequences of the issues are as follows: some public spaces are stereotypical functionally and bizarre,as the designers focus only on showing their skills instead of the substance of the spaces. As a result, the "production in space" turns into "space production".The context of urban development is ignored, the masses' everyday life and personal needs are neglected, and the quality of public spaces is not ensured. This paper analyzes the existing problems, criticizes the mere pursuit of modernism, and abandons many post-modern theories and the attitudes of banter, aloofness, conceit, and escape. It determines the role and value of public space for everyday life based on the theories on everyday life by Henri Lefebvre,Michel de Certeau and others in philosophy and sociology fields. With a focus on the everyday life and its related theories, this paper proposes a set of design principles and methods in order to eliminate the limitations of the modernism mindset, strong capital, and authority over the design of architectural public space,as well as advocate a design idea of respecting everyday life, meeting the masses' needs, and expressing truth and peace.Compared with theoretical innovation and method study, this paper is intended to explore the possibility of shifting the current value orientation of architecture to everyday life.
