Regional economic disparity is associated with the coordinated andsustainable development of national social economy. Under the backgroundof promoting the overall regional economic development and buildingmoderately prosperous society, how to reduce the regional economicdisparity of old industrial base in Northeast China, and explore the paths andcountermeasures of regional economic coordinated development becomes animportant content to promote regional sustainable development. The centralJilin Province is an important part of old industrial base in Northeast Chinaand State commercial grain base, The problem of its regional economicdisparity is related to revitalizing the overall economic development of oldindustrial base in Northeast China, which needs urgent research and solution.Taking the central Jilin Province as a case study, this paper uses the regionalbalanced development theories, the imbalanced of regional economiesdevelopment theories, the regional economic space effect theories and theregional economic coordination development theories, and applies themethods and theories of regional economics, industrial economics andeconomic geography to analyze the space-time evolution of the economicinequality from the perspectives of regional economy, industrial structureand urban-rural income. Meanwhile, this paper examines the formationmechanisms of its economic disparities; we propose the paths andcountermeasures of economic coordination development in central JilinProvince from strengthening regional economic linkages, promoting industryand urban-rural coordinated development. The purpose of this paper is to enrich the theories and practices of regional economic disparities andcoordinated development, to provide reference for regional economiccoordination development of old industrial base in Northeast China, topromote the sustainable development of economy and society. The main research contents are as follows:1. This paper elaborates the basic concepts and related theoretical basisof regional economic disparities and coordinated development. After that, thetheoretical analysis has been done for regional economic disparities, regionaleconomic linkages, regional economic coordinated development, regionaleconomic disparities and coordinated development of old industrial base, itwill enrich relevant theories and connotations of regional economicdevelopment in economic geography.2. The spatiotemporal evolution of economic disparities, industrialstructure difference and urban-rural income disparity has been analyzed incentral Jilin Province utilizing quantitative methods of range, standarddeviation, the weighted coefficient of variation, Gini coefficient and the GISspatial analysis techniques.meanwhile, this paper explores factors whichinfluence economic disparities in central Jilin Province from eight aspects.3. Based on the above analysis, the paths have been explored foreconomic coordinated development from strengthening regional economiclinkages, guiding industrial linkages and promoting urban-rural association.Meanwhile, in view of the different path, some countermeasures have beenput forward to promote economic coordination development. The main results can be concluded as follows:1. According to the space-time evolution of economic disparities, therange and standard deviation of per capita GDP were increasing in centralJilin Province from1995to2010, this showed that the absolute differencehas expanded year by year, however, From1995to2010, the relative differences showed a upward and a downward trend, which displayed aninverse-U shape. Changchun and Jilin kept being economic hotspots since1995while other areas were changing unstably. From1995to2010,Changchun and Jilin were the areas with rapid growth rate; the rapiddeveloping areas are gradually diffusing to Songyuan region and areas withlow development speed stays at the south part of the research area, the levelof economic development showed a certain imbalance.2. According to the spatial-temporal evolution of industrial structuredifference, in the study area, the proportion of primary industry wasdownward, at the same time, the proportion of secondary industry wasupward, and the proportion of tertiary industry of each region was indifferent situation. The low proportion of primary industry was mainlydistributed in urban areas, while its high proportion was mainly distributed incommercial grain bases. The low proportion of secondary industry wasmainly distributed in Yushu, Shulan, Lishu, and so on, its high proportionwas mainly distributed in Changchun, Jilin, Songyuan and Qianan. The highproportion of tertiary industry was mainly distributed in urban areas, thedevelopment of tertiary industry between county territory and urban area wasvisibly different.3. According to the spatial-temporal evolution of urban-rural incomedisparity, from1995to2010, the absolute difference and relative differencesshowed expanded year by year, this indicated that there was obviouscharacteristic of urban-rural dual structure in the central Jilin Province. Theregions which were low level of urban-rural income had been at low level ofurban-rural disparity. However, the regions which were high level ofurban-rural income had been at high level of urban-rural disparity. Thegrowth rate of urban per capita disposable income is faster than the growthrate of rural household income, the disparity level of urban-rural income inurban areas was higher than the county territory. 4. The economic linkage concentration area has been formed which is inthe middle cities with an outward radiating “concentric circle” shape andChangchun as its center. Each region’s intensity of urban flow increased. Thetotal economic linkages were constantly increasing in Changchun and Jilinareas from1995to2010,and showed a significantly spatialdifferentiation. The circle-type spatial pattern of economic linkages thatreduced gradually from Changchun and Jilin to outside had emerged.thedistribution was not balanced, and intensity of urban flow was lower in thesouth and higher in the north.5. The structure of industry and tertiary industry were increasinglydiversified. The locational Gini coefficient of most industries declined, andpresented state of rapid diffusion in space. The tertiary industry showedlower agglomeration level. So, to further strengthen industry specializationand promote the development of industrial convergence will be needed.6. The disparity of urban-rural association in central Jilin Province wasremarkable, and the circle-type spatial pattern of urban-rural association thatreduced gradually from Changchun and Jilin to outside had emerged. Thedegree of urban-rural association of urban area was higher than countyterritory; this spatial pattern was consistent with the law of economicdisparities in central Jilin Province. The countermeasure is proposed tonarrow regional economic disparities and achieve coordinated developmentin central Jilin Province from six aspects based on the above conclusions.
