Shang Chengzuo’s Study On Philogoly

Shang Chengzuo is one of the famous ancient Chinese character scientists who acquried great achievements in many fields, such as inscriptions on bone and tortoise shells, philology, inscriptions on bronze, seal lacquer, historical archaeology, calligraphy.He left to us about15masterpieces, more than60academic papers and2kinds of calligraphy works.On the basis of the complete study on his philological works, We study his experience on ancient Chinese character completely, summarize his methods and characteristics systematically, and find his philology thought, especially the knowledge on the evolution of ancient writing features and the development of the character.The thesis consists of seven chapters, besides introduction and conclusion, the main body of this thesis include three parts.The first part is about "methodology",that is to discuss the methods about inspecting inscriptions on bone and tortoise shells and inscriptions on bronze used by Shang Chengzuo.It can be divided into inspection depending on structure, pronunciation and meaning. We summarize his characteristics of inspecting ancient Chinese character.The second part is about Shang Chengzuo’s thought of philology. That is, to excavate his various philology thought, to review and summarize his views about philology’s origin, development stage, ancient characters, structure evolution mode, and so on.The third part is the research on "ShuowenGuwen"(《說文》古文)which Shang Chengzuo studies. We compares Shang Chengzuo with Hu Xiaoshi and Shu Lianjing. We make a comparison between their masterpieces about "ShuowenGuwen"(《說文》古文)from comparing the similarities and differences, from understanding of ancient prose style, content, research methods, summarizes and comments Shang Chengzuo’s achievement gains and losses on research of "ShuowenGuwen"(《說文》古文)prose, also supplements on44"ShuowenGuwen"(《說文》古文),puts forward some new ideas. Chapter seven is the conclusion, including the main characteristics,main achievesments, failures and reasons of Shang Chengzuo’s philological research. Based on the previous research, this thesis has obtained some innovations as follows:Firstly, Shang Chengzuo sent a long time studying ancient Chinese characters, he had different characteristics in different times. We studied Shang Chengzuo’s philological works completely and deeply for the first time. Our work can enrich and improve the academic history of philology.Secondly, although Shang Chengzuo researches ancient characters depending on structure mainly, it’s different from only analysing the structure. During the process, Shang Chengzuo also pays attention to the meaning of diction, phonology, and often combine several methods. We summarized and analysed Shang Chengzuo’s methods to verify and explain ancient Chinese characters completely for the first time.Thirdly, Shang Chengzuo had many views on Chinese characters, such as the origin, the development, the law of evolution the structure, and so on. We concluded Shang Chengzuo’s views on philology systematically and completely for the first time. It is conducive to make up for the lack of ideological history of philology.
