"Hysteria" primary show in Zhang Zongjing’s "Synopsis of Golden Chamber-The women’s miscellaneous diseases’pulse and cure:The women have hysteria, sorrow to cry, like making by god, stretches and yawn, cured by Ganmai Dazao Decotion." For many years, people thinks that this is a women proprietary disease, and the pathogenesis has different versions but agreed that the nature of the disease is caused by deficiency.In western medicine, there is no disease called "Hysteria", according to the sign and symptom, this is treated as mental disorders. For many years, studies have been carried out, the majority thinks that "Hysteria" is a kind of depression and commonly appears in menopause women. The etiology is yin deficiency resulting in heat and dry. The Ganmai Dazao Decotion is the only prescription to cure as demonstrated by Zhang Zongjing. Ironically, current research showed that merely uses Ganmai Dazao Decotion to cure "Hysteria" only have minor effect. Therefore people doubted the efficacy that has been established and difficult to give precise diagnosis. With face to the symptom of sorrow to cry, the later doctors have different point of views, so the medical record is dispersed to different categories making the research even harder.ObjectiveCollect the relevant literature about "Hysteria" from Ming and Qing dynasties and the medical records on present, through statistical analysis to identify the etiology and pathogenesis of hysteria and rule of herbal prescription.Method:Use "Hysteria "as key word, search from Chinese journals database, collected 12 medical records from Ming and Qing Dynasties and 102 cases of current research, systematically summarize the etiology, pathogenesis, sign and symptom, treatment and prescription. Through statistical method analysis the rule of drugs in "Hysteria" A compressive discussion on drugs compatibility also enhance.ResultsUnder the frequency distribution analysis on Ming Qing Dynasties, the main manifest on "Hysteria" is sorrow to cry; syndrome is heart and spleen deficiency and the herbal medicine include Fructus, Jujubae, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Radix Ginseng, Poria, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Os Draconis and Polygalaceae. Most of medicine belong to Heart and spleen Meridian and the efficacy towards warm and chilly. In current cases, the main manifest is insomnia syndrome is insomnia. Due to symptoms are so dispersed, this research use factor analysis to reveal the internal relationship among the symptoms. There are 7 factors identify from the analysis, they are factor one-Hyperactivity of fire due to Yin deficiency, factor two-Deficiency of the Heart and Spleen, factor three-disorder of stomach and liver, factor four-Incoordination between Heart and Kidney, factor five-Hyperactivity Liver Yang, factor six-Stagnation of Liver Qi, factor seven-Constipation. These seven factors conclude the current cases 62.749% information and can ease the diagnosis of "Hysteria" The information also revealed that "Hysteria" also appears with other disease. In treatment of "Hysteria", there are 160 kinds of herbal medicine were used in 102 cases and 16 kinds are frequently used, they are:Radix Glycyrrhizae, Fructus Triticiaestivi, Fructus Jujubae, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, Poria, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix Bupleuri, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Curcumae,Os Draconis, BulbusLilii, Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Polygalae, Concha Ostreae, Polygoni Multiflori, Fructus Tritici Levis. The efficacy of the herbal medicine in sweet and flat taste and mostly belong to heart and liver meridian. The result of Factor analysis in frequently used herbal medicine generated 5 factors. According to their performance, they are named:factor one-Nourish Heat and spleen; factor two-Soothing liver and nourish blood, factor three-sedative mind; factor four-nourish heart and tranquilize mind; factor five-stopping sweat. These factors can be considered as the treatment of "Hysteria" in nowadays.ConclusionThe results of the literature research and statistical analysis showed that:the incidence of "hysteria" is not woman proprietary disease, men can also suffering from it provided they have the same pathogenesis and etiology. "Hysteria" normally involved heart and spleen, the syndrome is heart and spleen deficiency. Clinical symptoms are sorrow to cry, dysphoric, poor appetite, fatigue, mood swings may diagnosis of "Hysteria". These are the symptoms of deficiency of heart and spleen as well. Nowadays, this type of "Hysteria" is merely seen because of the food nutrition and social environment. The present incident of "hysteria" is mostly triggered by stagnation of liver qi; Ganmai Dazao Decotion is the main prescription in treatment of deficiency heart and spleen.
