Objective:Menstrual distending pain of breasts (MDPB), which is also a sign of other gynecologic diseases, is one of the common clinical symptoms. However, MDPB is ignored, frequently. The current study collected and analyzed the literatures related distending pain of breasts in the period of year 1976 to 2013. Pathogeny, diagnosis, types of symptoms were analyzed and organized into the prescription database. Based on the current study, the best treatment methods were suggested in order to prevent the MDPB from developing into mammary gland hyperplasia, and even the cancer.Methods:There were 3 steps for this study:1. The literatures were reviewed and analyzed in the aspects of symptoms, definitions, and diagnoses. Moreover, the Chinese and Western medicine’s understands and treatments on the MDPB were discussed.2. Literatures were collected and analyzed:a) The effects of MDPB on health; b) diagnosis of MDPB; c) types of symptoms; d) the relationships between breast and internal organs; e) the relationships between breast diseases and Chong and Conception Channels; f) the treatments of traditional Chinese medicine (prescription, acupuncture and external application, massage, and regulating mentality, therapeutic et al). The study summarized the contemporary research developments, and suggested the directions of future studies.3. The study employed the statistic methods to create the prescription database of MDPB, and understood the high-frequency prescriptions. In order to understand the characteristic of prescriptions in different eras, the four nature of drugs and five flavors were analyzed.Results:1.461 literatures were collected, and the number increase year by year. This indicated that this topic gets more and more attentions.2. That stagnation of liver qi is main etiology of MDPB, and follow with disharmony of Chong and Conception Channels, yin deficiency of liver and kidney.3. There were 282 literatures contained full prescriptions, and 487 prescriptions were collected. The most popular prescriptions are xiaoyao powder, chaihu shugan powder, yiguan decoction, xuefu zhuyu decoction.4. There were 238 traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients used in these 307 prescriptions. The top 10 ingredients were debark peony root (264 times)、 Chinese thorowax root (246 times)、Chinese angelica (238 t times)、liquorice root (196 times)、nutgrass galingale rhizome (189 times)、Indian bread (166 times)、largehead atractylodes rhizome (142 times)、turmeric root tuber (136 times)、sichuan lovage rhizome (104 times)、orange fruit (94 times)。5. The four nature of drugs and five flavors of these 238 ingredients were analyzed. The results indicated that the major ingredients are bitter or sweet. Besides, the warm ingredients were used more than cold/cool ingredients.6. The major of channel tropism is Jueyin Liver Channel of Foot.7. For the purpose of ingredients. The most popular one is tonifying formula.Conelusion:1.The causes of MDPB are highly related to malfunction of liver、kidney、 spleen and stomach, especially the liver.2. The mechanism of MDPB is the stagnation of liver qi.3. The bases of treatments are dispersing stagnated liver qi for relieving qi stagnation、regulating qi-flowing for harmonizing stomach.4. The most popular prescriptions are xiaoyao powder, chaihu shugan powder, yiguan decoction, xuefu zhuyu decoction.5. For the ingredients, debark peony root is the most popular one, and followed by Chinese thorowax root、Chinese angelica、liquorice root、nutgrass galingale rhizome、Indian bread、largehead atractylodes rhizome、turmeric root tuber、sichuan lovage rhizome、orange fruit、dried tangerine peel、 szechwan chinaberry fruit、immature tangerine peel、tree peony root bark、 peppermint.
