For recent years, Central Government of China launched its innovation-driven development strategy. Science and Technology City(STC) will become an important platform to promote independent innovation of China, and also, it will demonstrate the transformation route for Chinese cities. The dissertation aims to intergrate innovation theory and urban theory to explore the basic principle and planning technique to support the development of innovation-driven STC from spatial planning perspective.Based on the generalization of innovation and urban theories and analysis for existing STC development practices, the dissertation constructs an evolutionary theoretical framework for innovation-driven STC. Through the detailed investigation of Beijing and Wuhan Future STC and general analysis of other STCs home and abroad, the dissertation presents the characteristics, mechanism and ideal pattern of STC industrial layout, social structure, land use pattern and spatial structure. With the support of the above conclusion, it further analyzes the key issue of STC planning, proposes the technical framework for STC comprehensive planning and applies it into two STC planning cases. The dissertation comes to the following six conclusions. 1) Innovation-driven STC development relies on five evolutionary mechanisms: knowledge and innovation source, human capital, embeddedness, innovation milieu and global-local nexus. The STC development usually goes through three stages: policy-driven stage, investment-driven stage and innovation-driven stage. The environment for innovation requires the interaction of business climate, people climate and space climate. 2) The key points for STC industrial layout include: strengthening the leading function of innovation source, constructing concentrated innovation service platform, putting technology-related industries in proximity, providing resilience to RDP complex, separating the interaction and communication platform for diversified subjects and reserving development space for consumer service industry. 3) The social structure of STC is as following: younger age structure, polarized education level, diversified occupation structure and polarized income level. The promotion of STC people climate requires satisfying the differentiated needs of knowledge workers and service workers, and stimulating the interaction and communication of different social classes. 4) The spatial structure of STC is determined by economic, social, informational and planning mechanisms and will show the characterized pattern which is different from traditional new town and development zone. The core area of STC contains innovation source, knowledge sharing and technology serving function, surrounded by specialized RDP( research, development and production) units, diversified residence and service units. Related function groups are located on the fringe of the central STC city. 5) The specialization of industries and diversification of life styles will influence the scale and composite pattern of land use, which shows some new features including specialization, mixed use and resilience. 6) The STC planning differs from traditional new town planning in participation subjects, service objects, basic principle, technical method and result expression. STC comprehensive planning emphasizes modularized technological industry organization, diversified social space for M-type social structure, technology embedded space and mosaic spatial structure for increasing spatial agglomeration effect, intensive and mixed land use, integration and optimization of smart infrastructure and resilient planning implementation measures.
