The paper sorts out the rise and falls of pile dwelling in the South of China, outlines theprocess of change of pile dwelling experienced in southern China, and explores the cause ofthe change. First, standing on a macro point of view, through the features reflected by the piledwelling sites to discuss process of change of pile dwelling within a long period; through theancient literatures, explore the change of the concept of the pile dwelling; through the modelsand images unearthed to find the tradition and continuity of pile dwelling. Then focus on threeareas of Sichuan, Lingnan and Southeast Guizhou, through analysis and comparison buildingsin historical documents and existing, the paper studies the change of pile dwelling and thereasons of the change in this three regions, and explores the spatial characteristics of piledwelling of Miao, Dong, Zhuang, and discuss the process of change and the causes.The author Collected ancient literatures, compared to the similarities and differences ofthe past and present pile dwelling concept, to discuss the change of the concept of the " piledwelling ". The paper sorts out pile dwelling sites, then analyzes their distribution, type,technical characteristics to explore the relationship of the pile dwelling and rice culture. Byarchaeological materials, the author summed up the style characteristics of early PILEDWELLING, and discussed pile dwelling Architecture Development.In the Lingnan area, the pile dwelling gradually decline since the Han Dynasty, Zhuangpile dwelling also strongly influenced by the Han-style buildings, part of pile dwelling stillretain the original features of nation pile dwelling in the western Guangxi. The Liao broughtthe pile dwelling into the Ba-Shu area, as the Liao integrated into the local people, the use ofpile dwelling in the Ba-Shu area was constantly shrinking. Miao and Dong use similar piledwelling building in Southeast Guizhou, In this closed geographical conditions, the Dongarchitectural culture affect the Miao, which is important reason that part of the Miao was nolonger use the ground residence and instead using the Pile dwelling.
