Product shape design concerns practical and aesthetic needs of the people, which directly influence market competition. The success of a product depends to a great extent on its shape and color scheme. In comparison with product functions, product shapes are better breakthrough points in terms of improvements and innovation. However, based on traditional methods, it is difficult to realize product shape innovation either. Designers apply bionics design continually since products exist. Furthermore, the recent design tendency shows a significant preference towards the concept of harmonious development between human and nature. Thus, bionic design, as a powerful method to break traditional concepts, has been paid more attention.A successful product should have following characteristics. Firstly, the product should have visual appeal, which makes consumers feel more connected. Secondly, the product should be flexible and adaptive, which could meet the unique needs of the consumers. Thirdly, the product should be pleasurable, which leads consumers cherish nature and life. All of the characteristics could be realized by bionic design and "living examples" could be seen all over the natural world.Bionic design is a specific method to design and create products with inspirations gained from the natural world. Shape bionic design is a method to design product shape by simulates and fits sizes, appearances and colors of natural beings through certain artistic treatments.Based on the status of both foreign and local research of bionic design, this paper did further research on a number of key issues. The main contents are as follows:(1)The significance of bionic shape design is demonstrated and the status of relative research is summarized. Major problems in current research are pointed out and the main contents in this paper are determined.(2)The meaning of product shape is analyzed. Basic elements based on types of products and characteristics of natural beings are elaborated. Features of product shape design based on bionic method are summarized. This paper proposed an ideal shape design model and process based on general methods of bionic research.(3)This paper integrates bionic shape design and reverse engineering. This paper proposed a simple method for surface reconstructing suitable for bionic shape design through a reverse engineering research on a washing machine. Principles and methods for simplifying creature characteristics are proposed and analyzed through a case on creature model. Problems in reverse engineering and surface reconstructing are solved and tested.(4)This paper did a quantitative research on MATLAB based on basic rule of evolution theory and genetic algorithm through a case of product model (clip) and creature model (shark). According to the effective results, relative problems in quantify product shape based on genetic algorithm are resolved. The idea of bionic shape design via digitization and the specific process based on intelligent reasoning technology are proposed. The paper also proposed a design process based on neural network and intelligent reasoning technology.(5)This paper analyzes and assesses the results of the case and did relative research in the last place.
