With the continuous development of social needs and computer technology, map design is gradually becoming better-automatic, better-educated and more intelligent and has achieved fruitful research results. As an extremely important kind of map, the statistical map is widely used in the national economy construction, teaching and scientific research, national defense construction and many other fields, and its intelligent design has received more and more attention. Case based reasoning is an effective method in the field of artificial intelligence. It can be used to solve new problems by reusing the past experience and knowledge in the context of new situations, and it has achieved good results and encouraging progress in many areas, showing a strong potential for application. To this end, this paper introduces the theory, technology and method of case based reasoning into the field of statistical map design, which aims to inherit and share of previous design experience and knowledge, to help users make correct design decisions, improve the efficiency and standardization of design, enhance the automation, knowledge and intelligence level. Major findings include:(1) The definition, characteristics and classification of statistical map are defined. The design thinking process and reading comprehension process are dissected. The spatial cognitive model of statistical map is put forward. The mechanism of statistical map design and the problem solving mechanism are studied. The internal connection and the application of the combination of the two are analyzed. The design mechanism and the application of case based reasoning are analyzed. The concept framework, logic framework and application framework of statistical map design are presented, which provide reference and guidance for the following intelligent study of the statistical map design.(2) The concept of statistical map design case is put forward through the research on the statistical map design situation. The statistical map design knowledge classification system based on faceted tree is studied, a case based statistical map design case representation method is put forward based on the comparative analysis of common knowledge representation methods and their applicability, which can effectively solve the problem of knowledge acquisition and provide an effective way for the design of experience and knowledge to inherit, share, spread and apply.(3) In the light of the content, process and requirements of case matching for statistical map design, a case matching method based on compound strategy for statistical map design is proposed. The paper focuses on the case design requirement matching based on semantic similarity, the case representation method matching based on BP neural network and the case display style matching based on improved collaborative filtering algorithm. On this basis, the overall similarity calculation of the case is realized. It embodies the philosophical thought of Dialectics, Specific issues need specific analysis, overcomes the reliability of a single matching method, enhances the practicability of case based reasoning method, and provides a new way to deepen the research of intelligent reasoning.(4) In the light of the tasks, requirements and methods for the revision of the statistical map design case, a case correction framework for user oriented statistical map design is presented, which satisfy the user’s functional requirements and emotional needs by modifying method of intelligent control and manual adjustment. The operating mechanism of data processing model in the case of statistical map design is analyzed, and the amendment of the intelligent control is realized. The construction mechanism of the statistical map symbol based on the layout relation is proposed, achieving its manual adjustment and correction. At the same time of meeting the needs of users, it provides the important support for the effective adjustment of the statistical map design case.(5) Based on the above research, in the domestic operating system running environment, the experimental system of statistical map design based on case reasoning is developed, which further verified the scientific and effective application of case based reasoning to the intelligent design of statistical map.
