| Among the current Enterprise Theories, a general accepted perspective is that the survival and development of enterprises depend on enterprises' competitive advantages, especially the sustained ones. The perspectives on the source of sustained competitive advantages, however, are diverse. In 1990, Prahalad and Hamel set forth the concept of the "Core Competence", and firmly believe that in long-term, the Core Competence of the corporation is the source of its competitive advantages. After Prahalad and Hamel, many western scholars conducted fierce discussion and widespread researches on the "Core Competence". In the late 90s, the "Core Competence" was introduced into China, and quickly attracted high regards by Chinese scholars. Whereas the majority of scholars supported the "Core Competence", many criticisms raised, such as "the rigidity of the Core Competence", "the differentiation of industries and common applicability issue", "ex post facto rationalization".My PhD supervisor and I, with carefully researches, believe that the "Core Competence" is variable both of industries and eras, i.e. the "Core Competence" varies with different industries and eras. It is mainly decided by the characteristics of the era. Consequently, it is predicable. This perspective can explain the current criticisms. Moreover, we believe that we are at the threshold of "Intelligent Era". As a result, "Enterprise Intelligent Management" (EIM) is to be the main source of the "Core Competence" in this century. From this logic set and based on the literatures summary, this dissertation explains, in the first place, the basic concept and the process of form and development of the "Core Competence" with the concepts and methods from the Modern Science of System, and sets forth a "Compound and Upgrade Model", and demonstrates that the "Core Competence" is variable of industries and eras. In the next step, this dissertation concludes the environmental characteristics of enterprises in this century and the challenges to management. Consequently, from the point of view of Enterprise Management, this dissertation examines the basic concept, model and analytical framework of EIM, and analyzes how EIM improves the "Core Competence". To testify the strong positive correlation between "Core Competence" and EIM, this dissertation conducts a positive research with questionnaire and statistical analysis. Finally, upon the outstanding management practices, this dissertation suggests the policies on how to advance the "Core Competence" with EIM. |
