This dissertation studies the transformed growth dynamics of China's foreign trade and its performance. The reality of China's foreign trade has demonstrated that the old path of pursuing growth at the cost of cheap labor and high resource consumption is no longer sustainable. Transforming the growth dynamics for foreign trade is key to sustainable development and essential to improving China's socialist market economy. As such, the study on the transformation, design of the new growth model and its performance carries great significance both in terms of theory and practice to deepening China's foreign trade reform by enhancing its sustainability and core competitiveness. This dissertation revolves around the design of China's foreign trade dynamics, the balancing of regional foreign trade growth and well-targeted policy recommendations. The study is underpinned by the real issues and future trends in this transformation. A wide host of methodologies are employed in the study: macro and micro, theoretical and empirical, quantitative and qualitative, graphs and figures. The result is a number of constructive policy recommendations, which aim to supplement the theory and practice of transforming China's foreign trade growth dynamics.By starting with a brief review of Chinese and foreign trade theories, the dissertationrevisits China's old path for trade, which was based on the comparative advantage of production factors. The dissertation then proceeds to analyze the status quo and future environment of China's foreign trade and identifies a number of problems in its development, such as limited gains, low competitiveness, high social costs, over-concentration of trade surplus and over-dependence on foreign trade. By looking at the reasons for China's extensive trade growth model, the article demonstrates the necessity of transforming the growth model. And from here, it presents a new comparative advantage theory based on six advantages, a new model and guiding principles for foreign trade growth. To better evaluate the new model, an evaluation system, valid both in theory and practice, is constructed on such parameters as product development stage, resource profile, region, mode of trade, type of business and sector (20 in total). Taking foreign trade growth between 2000 and 2005 in the central and western regions as an example, the system evaluates the new model with accurate figures. Based on the evaluation result, a brand-new DTP analytical tool is developed to give graphic profiling of the transformation. The dissertation ends with some conclusions from the empirical study and accordingly offers some policy recommendations.
