Since the appearance of the first TV news program in 1958,China's TV news hasevolved for 50 years. The ups and downs and the successes and failures over the pastfive decades present to us a history in which China's new programs started fromscratch and progressed from weakness to strength.Over the 50 years,China's TVnews programs have achieved constant elevation through continuous innovation andreform and attained impressive accomplishments. The research of this paper is centered on the following fundamental topic:thedevelopment path and motives of TV news programs under China's existing system. In understanding and assessing this topic, the evolution of China's TV news programsand their linkage with external motives have been uncovered. In the research process, the author has attempted to depart from regular research models and overcomedisciplinary barriers in order to introduce broader, plural and balanced concepts fromsome other disciplines in social sciences and humanities to the creation anddevelopment of TV news programs. The main body of this paper consists of five chapters. The first four chaptersprovide a chronological account of the approach, forms and contents of China's TVnews programs and the changes of its system, and identify their evolution and flux. These chapters then shed light on the internal dynamics and external trajectory ofChina's TV news programs,in order to gain a full understanding of the historicdevelopment of China's TV news programs.Chapterâ… strives to capture the development of China's TV news programs in itsearly stage (1958-1979).In its first 20 years,China's TV news was characterized by asmall volume, limited contents, confinement of forms to the few types which hadoccurred at its beginning, and insignificant influence of news coverage.Thesecharacteristics were the results of China's particular political, economic, cultural andsocial situations in that era.Chapterâ…¡examines the development of China's TV news programs in itsrectification and improvement stage (1980-1992).This chapter focuses on threeaspects of China's TV news coverage - the expansion of contents, the improvement of broadcasting methods, and the reform of the TV news system.During this stage,China's TV news programs were shifting from quantitative development to qualitativeenhancement, and TV news' advantages of fastness, newness and liveliness began tomanifest. At this point, the exploration and reform of China's TV news have yet tobecome a sizable operation, and the reform is mostly limited to formality, with nosignificant breakthrough over an extended period of time;the number of TV newscolumns rose steadily, but there were many deficiencies.Chapterâ…¢probes the development of China's TV news programs in its rapiddevelopment stage (1993-2003).On March 1,1993,CCTV launched the"MorningNews",broadcasting news on the hours 12 times per day.On May 1 of the same year,CCTV launched the"Oriental Horizon",which is generally regarded as the beginningof the current round of TV news reform. This chapter conducts research in newsaspects, including breaking news, news features, news interviews, external coverage, major coverage, and news channels.During this period of time,news-relatedprograms gradually became the leading programs of all TV stations;new TV conceptswere progressively established;new forms of TV news programs emerged in quicksuccession, and different types of TV news were drawing upon one another'sstrengths and mutually complementary in genre, contents, contents, functions, stylesand formats, which eventually led to the creation of a three-dimensional,styled,multi-layer and multi-functional TV news broadcasting pattern;moreover, electronictechnology grew by leaps and bounds and was quickly adopted for the production ofTV news programs. In this historic stage,China's TV news programs achieved aqualitative leap forward in news concept, program forms, production approach, andsocial influence.Chapterâ…£studies the development of China's TV news programs in its pluraldevelopment stage (2003-2008).This staged was marked by the launch of CCTV'snews channel. This chapter conducts research in three aspects:the formation anddevelopment of CCTV's news channel, the development of provincial satellite TVnews programs, and the news programs of local TV stations.CCTV's news channelcompleted its transition to a professional channel in terms of basic concept, management system, and specific operations.Although CCTV had largely set up amodern news broadcasting system that fitted the framework of a professional channel, there was still a considerable gap between CCTV and the world's first-class newschannels in terms of information resources and talent reserves.Althoughprovincial-level satellite TV news programs had the capabilities of covering thenational market via satellites, most of them did not have advantages in the nationalmarket, and regional markets remain their primary markets, with the market of theirhome province being their core market, which was essential to the survival anddevelopment of the provincial-level satellite TV news programs. In this stage, thedevelopment of local TV programs was largely concentrated on news about people'slivelihood.Although news about people's livelihood had the characteristics ofhumanistic concern and people-based thoughts, most of the news programs wereconfined to the coverage of trivial issues and neglected substantial issues relating topeople's livelihood. This undermined the depth that TV news was supposed to achieveand might have resulted in a misplacement of the duties for the media. Moreover, thepropensity of news on people's livelihood for entertainment in choosing subjectmatters and in presenting the news diminished the seriousness of traditional TV newsprograms, and some news programs on people's livelihood even became a hotbed oftriviality and vulgarity.Chapterâ…¤analyzes the motives of the development of China's TV newsprograms. This chapter primarily studies the influence of the media's social ecologicalfactors on the development of TV news in the new stage in four aspects:news policy, economy, culture and technology,in order to present an open and comprehensiveperspective. The emergence and development of China's TV news programs aredeeply rooted in China's particular political, economic, cultural and technologicalcontext. The news policy, economic transition, changing cultural needs and advancesin electronic technology jointly promote and impact upon the development of China'sTV news programs.
