With the rapid development of economic globalization, China manufacturing industry is facing some serious challenges and has development opportunities. In China, the production mode of majority heavy equipment manufacturing is small-scale and customization, as the result, the product design becomes the core factor for enterprises competition. That means the rapid product design technology becomes significant for enhancing the enterprise's capacity to response the market demand rapidly. Based on 863 national research program naming "Modularized Parameterized Co-Design System for Heavy Equipment "(Program Index: 2005 AA415240), the research have studied the rapid design theory, method and the key technology for mechanical products. It is put forward an integrated rapid design system based on product platform in the paper. In the integrated system, modularity is the basis of product design; parametric is the support means; PLM is the integrated management systems. With enterprises' actual demand and the above program, the author developed an integrated design system for the rapid design of bridge crane.The paper includes the follow main contents:1. Based on the concepts of mechanical products rapid design, the author analyzed and summarized the key technologies as well as the research and application at home and abroad. It mainly includes modular design technology, the product family and the product platform, computer aided technology, KBE technology and PLM technology.2. discussed the related concept and characteristic of product platforms, it is presented product family design system based on the Platform, and analyzed the composition and framework principle of the product platform, and presented the process for setting up the structure in the paper.According to the analysis of product development status in heavy machinery enterprises, it is put forward a strategy to overcome the bottleneck of the products rapid design, and a rapid design solution which is the product platform orientation. As result, the software architecture of solution is designed.3. Through summarizing the principles and methods of modular design, an integrated modular design method for mechanical products is put forward; So does a flexible way about module division after summarizing the ways of modular partition. The new method of the module partition has advantage in structure of the product platform. It is also proposed and verified to the methods of rapid design and module partition in the bridge crane design.4. In the base of studying the parametric and modeling techniques, as well as the knowledge-based 3D parametric design technology, connected with the development practice of bridge crane parametric design, it is put forward the parametric design methods which suit to the structure (parts level module), organ (parts level module) and component level module for the product platform, as well as the rapid CAE modeling and analysis methods.5. Studying the PLM technology, which is product platforms orientation, analyzing its architecture and core functions, searching for the key data model of PLM, the most enabling technologies to product platform is developed, which employ the PLM and consist of the knowledge management, configuration design, process integration and concurrent engineering and project management.6. Appling the above theory and technology to design of large crane machinery, an integrated system with parametric and modular is developed. Also the functions of the various subsystems are realized. When we use of the system, it is easy to accumulate the design experience and knowledge to avoid the losing of design experience on one hand. On the other hand to classification the key parts for standardization and product serialization and to avoid arbitrary design. At the same time, the cost of the production and processing can be reduced, the design efficiency is increased and the designer is liberated.
