From the perspective of "disciplinary institution" , this article will examine the institutionalization of and the emergence of the dominant paradigm of mass communication study in the journalism education in the U.S. and China respectively. In the U.S., as a product of interdisciplinary research, mass communication study initially had no "blood relations" with journalism. With some coincidence, the founding father Wilbur Schramm incorporated his vision of communication study to journalism schools, and thus provided an example for the field. The so-called tension between journalism and mass communication just originated from that. In other words, some people's personal intentions were critical to the marriage between journalism and mass communication. But once the example was set, it exerted a great influence upon the development of both two disciplines. In 1970-1980s, the journalism-mass communication system was copied and adjusted by the Chinese journalism education.Rather than born in China, mass communication study was '"introduced" to China as a full-formed discipline. So that Chinese researchers were inclined to take the journalism-mass communication model for granted and overlook the interdisciplinarity of mass communication study, thus confining the mass communication study to journalism circle. The weakness of the social sciences in China is another extrinsic restricting factor of the growth of mass communication study. The American dominant paradigm was also copied to Chinese journalism education along with the concepts and theories of mass communication.
