Two obvious trends in the current transmission network are IP and Multi-media. The fast increase of data service and great capacity of multi-media application brings unprecedented upgrade pressure to traditional telecom transmission network. Telecom metro area network based on SDH is keep on going to improve the carrying capability and switching capability to match the development of data service positively, especially for the application of multi-media service. Network merging is the great tread, positive network model changing and revolution is un-reversed, traditional voice telecom network and IP network is the relationship of complementary and co-development. How to carry the blended service of voice, data and streaming media efficiently on present telecom metro area network structure is the key issue of this dissertation.From the metro area network revolution and streaming media performance, some deep research on multi-service carrying technology and network performance have been taken. In the exordium, the background of MANs and the trend of new streaming media service are introduced, and summarizes the main research work and project work of the author, include the main innovation work. In the second chapter of this dissertation, the main technology of the current metro area network has been probed into deeply; the third chapter analysis the character of streaming media service and its transmission performance; in the fourth chapter, the author proposes TDPBA scheme to transmit streaming media service efficiently in metro area network, and performs simulation on the software platform; in the fifth chapter, based on the smart metro area network transmit test bed and simulation result, the author proposes a metro area network carrying streaming media service composite solution that takes both network performance and reliability into consider.In general, the second chapter is the discussion to MANs technology, the third and fourth chapter is the analysis to streaming media service, the fifth chapter is the extension of the combination of research work and practical experience, the new streaming media service transporting on new MANs is always the core of the dissertation, detailed as follows:The second chapter research on the frame work and structure of smart metro area optical network, and also the key technology of it. Performs many test work for GFP, VC and LCAS based on "Smart MAN test bed", quantify the main performance index. Evaluate GFP encapsulation protocol contrast to LAPS and PPP. The impact to SDH network introduced by LCAS -fixed system delay- is proposed, and calculates the critical point of delay, proposes some critical problem when implementing LCAS. Proposes a combination protection scheme based on VC and LCAS, and performs index evaluation on the MSTP networking platform, provide the guide to smart MAN device with dynamic bandwidth adjustment function.The third chapter research on the service model of streaming media service, analysis a great number of varied service model character in different network. Analyze the character of self-similar model, MMPP, CMPP and the key situation of them. We combine the three models into the streaming media traffic transmission simulation platform. The related simulation work has been taken with different rate, different traffic quantity and shows the typical character and mathematical characters of CBR and VBR service, provide some practical theory indication for the performance analysis of Metro Area Network carrying streaming media service.Chapter four analyze the problem of SDH-based Metro area network carrying streaming media service, put forward that the statistical multiplexing technology and priority-based dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme would promote the of MANs' carrying capability. We simulate the performance of statistical multiplexing; discuss the multiple priority statistical multiplexing algorithms. Then a novel bandwidth allocation scheme is proposed in this dissertation based on the character of streaming media service, called threshold-based dynamic priority bandwidth allocation scheme (TDPBA) and verified by simulation. The newly proposed scheme overcomes the inaccurate bandwidth allocation of threshold control and the complex computation of traditional priority algorithm and easy to realize in the system. We simulate the network transmit performance on a specific four-class priority system software test bed, the result shows that the TDPBA scheme can assure the credible transmission for this kind of traffic maximum but at the cost of low QoS traffic, which is suitable for the application that with strict QoS requirements.Chapter five introduces the smart metro area optical network test bed and streaming media traffic transmission simulation platform. The smart metro area optical network test bed is composed of 4 nodes, organized as a Mesh network. This platform combined the new generation MSTP hardware system and metro area network smart management, can provide varied service interface and flexible control management capability. The streaming media service transmission simulation platform can simulate varied types of service source model, and perform traffic simulating, service aggregating and statistical multiplexing function; the data result is of some representability and reliability, which is mainly used for the theory research. At the end of this chapter, based on the theory research and simulation to metro area network and streaming media, we design a set of solution for metro area network carrying streaming media from the eye of device realization. Include the multiplexing and transmission of service source, the buffer sharing and bandwidth allocation of network device. The realization of TDPBA scheme could base on the service label and that could be an efficient way for metro area network carrying video streaming media service based on the performance improvement of SDH based metro area network device.
