This dissertation uses Southern Metropolis Daily as study case with a review of its ten years development and complicated news production practice, attempting to investigate, from an angle of field of newsroom, the interaction between news production and social control. Through this study, the writer attempts to real the real yet complicated news production practice and power regulation traits behind magnificent narration and simplified generalization, and provide the readers, therefore as a result, telling and typical live case for appreciating connection between news production and social control, media reform and social transition, and between media system and social system.Applying the research approach of sociology of news production and implementing anthropologic methodologies such as field study and in-depth interview, the dissertation has theoretical significance and innovative value in terms of both study approaches and application of research methods. Logically, it includes two parts: thick description and theoretic interpretation, therefore, on the basis of detailed description of complicated news production practice of Southern Metropolis Daily, abstract yet appropriate theoretic interpretation is provided.The paper first in its foreword explains two reasons for selecting Southern Metropolis Daily as study case. Chapter one presents the dissertation's core issue, theoretic framework, significant and methodology etc. It also reviews the fruits of past sociology of news production and carries out necessary interpretation of keywords of the dissertation. Chapter two first reviews three phases in Southern Metropolis Daily's growth, followed by an analysis of the real significance of its "mainstream newspaper" transformation, and ends with a theoretic interpretation of the interaction between exterior political and economic control factors and interior ones within the profession. Chapter three initiates with a depiction of the newspaper's routine news production process and editing system, and ends in an analysis of the values of its newsroom and traits of news production field. Chapter four studies the evolution of the newspaper's review page, its function and significance. The focus lies in its transition from "citizen writing" to "elite writing", and from public expression to enlightenment. Chapter five studies news production characteristics of the newspaper's in-depth report with a detailed analysis of Sun Zhigang case. The chapter ends with a summary of the aforementioned traits and the function of in-depth report. While inquiring the practice strategy of the newspaper's in-depth report and interaction between news production and social control, the writer also provide concept such as "strategic breakthrough" and "tacit agreement" with innovativeinterpretation.Setting news production characteristics of Southern Metropolis Daily's newsroom in the context of transitional Chinese society, the conclusion part first analyzes this study case's universality and particularity, and, with this as the angle, observes the real interaction between media, market, and democracy in a Chinese context. It then put forth several suggestions for how metropolitan newspapers may bear the responsibility of public communication in marketization.
