Recent explosive increases in data traffic, primarily driven by the prevalence of the Internet, have spurred research efforts to develop ultra-large capacity optical transmission systems, long-haul optical fiber telecommunication system benefits greatly from successful application of C-band erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and C-band Dense Wavelength Multiplexing (DWDM) system. The advent of all-wave fiber created low loss window which covers 1200-1700nm, especially in 1450-1600nm region, the signal loss is less than 0.5dB/km, so this made it a great challenge to develop a practical amplifier for the full exploitation of the so-called S-band (1460-1530nm) which has twice the bandwidth of the C-band. Now new design to optimize the amplifier parameter, new pump scheme, broaden the amplifier's window have attract great research interest.Besides the application in optical communication, the Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) light source featured by high power, no polarization, and wide wavelength range, could be widely used in 15xxnm band fiber sensor system to take advantage of the variety of the optical fiber components in this band which boomed by optical fiber telecommunication.Consequently, it will be great meaning to do some research on optical amplification in rare earth doped fibers. The aim of this dissertation is to present new design, new model on this field with emphases on the following respects:1. A new design is presented on the fiber amplifier which pumped by internallygenerated pumpSuppose there is overlap between the absorption spectrum of rare earth ion A and emission spectrum of ion B, laser which wavelength is desirable for pump A can be generated inside the fiber by codoping the two kinds of ion together and construct a laser cavity which has the wavelength within the overlap range.
