The grid technology is a completely new information technology, which makes it possible to overcome the inherent limitations of the traditional Internet technology. Since the advent of the concept and idea of grid, it has had a great impact all over the world. As many countries attach great importance to it, the grid technology has developed rapidly within only several years, and has been applied in practical fields of scientific research and engineering design. From the aspect of constructing generic grid platform, grid has undergone three phases, namely, original meta-computing, protocol-centered five-tier sandglass system, and service-centered OGSA system. From the aspect of the application of grid, it has undergone the stages of data grid, accessing grid, information grid, semantic grid and knowledge grid. Meanwhile, many traditional and new types of grid technology have been applied in the construction of grid, such as UDDI, XML, Semantic Web and Ontology, etc. Among them the technology of ontology is particularly important, which plays a vital role in constructing the semantic connections between grid knowledge resources and enables grid to comprehend knowledge. As the grid technology inherits and develops traditional Internet technology, some scholars call it as "the third generation of Internet technology".Previous experiences have shown that the advent of any new type of information technology will bring great influence and enlightenment to the research related to information management. Currently the huge advantages of the grid technology over traditional Internet technology have already been shown. Thus this dissertation has as its basis the hotspot of the research and application of the grid technology—knowledge grid, focuses on the application of grid technology in knowledge management, and elucidates the grid knowledge management technology, which is the combination of knowledge grid and knowledge management. In accordance with the characteristics and functions of knowledge grid, grid knowledge management technology includes two essential parts: grid knowledge discovery andgrid knowledge service.Grid knowledge discovery is a parallel and distributed knowledge discovery model. It overcomes the limitations of the traditional knowledge discovery with data mining as its representative, as it combines the data mining algorithm, tool and software distributed on the Internet, conceptualizes them through ontology, organizes these elements through metadata and forms a highly integrative knowledge discovery system. On this basis the knowledge discovery service framework used to discover grid knowledge is developed, and knowledge discovery service is integrated into the environment of grid knowledge as a part of knowledge grid. The knowledge grid used to discover knowledge is constructed on the basis of data grid and generic grid service, through which grid knowledge discovery service operates the object of knowledge discovery—data of all the fields distributed on the grid.Possessing the functions of the traditional knowledge services, grid knowledge service mainly supports domain knowledge sharing of specific tasks. It is a service and technology applied in widely distributed knowledge management. It makes full use of knowledge semantics and ontology, constructs the semantic service, semantic data integration, resource agent, workflow combination scheme and domain ontology of knowledge through the semantic analysis of knowledge, and thus utilizes grid knowledge sufficiently and effectively. Grid knowledge service is mainly used to solve the six challenges of knowledge lifecycle: acquisition, modeling, retrieval, reusing, publishing and management. Under the environment of traditional Internet, the phases of the lifecycle of knowledge management are separate from each other. The purpose of grid knowledge service is to integrate the six aspects and provide the user with a flexible, extendable and easily reusable knowledge service framework. Many countries have recognized the importance of grid technology and carried out many application projects about grid technology, among which the e-Science project of England is a typical example. Several pilot projects of e-Science are being carried out smoothly, especially the application projects of grid knowledge discovery and knowledge service, such as Discovery Net, myGrid, Geodise have been applied in practical scientific research and engineering design and have achieved very goodresults. The Chinese Scientific Institution has also carried out the research on grid with e-Science as the research focus. This dissertation will elucidate what has been mentioned above:The introduction mainly introduces the background of writing the dissertation and its research significance, the present research work about grid technology at home and abroad, the ways of doing the research and the innovations.Chapter One introduces the principles of grid, including the basic concepts of grid, its characteristics and future direction of research; the differences and connections between grid technology and traditional Internet; the application fields of grid technology and its major users; the five-tier sandglass system of grid and OGSA criterion; the generic implemented technology of grid.Chapter Two elucidates the construction of grid knowledge management environment, including the advantages of grid knowledge environment, the components and functions of grid knowledge environment, and the carrier of grid knowledge resource management—knowledge grid.Chapter Three analyzes the discovery mechanism of grid knowledge, including the principles of grid knowledge discovery, PDKD system based on knowledge grid, knowledge discovery model under the grid environment, the application of ontology in grid knowledge discovery, and the design of the application of knowledge discovery system under the grid environment.Chapter Four analyzes the mechanism of grid knowledge service, including the basic principles, framework (including basic framework and extended framework) of grid knowledge service, discovery, description and workflow of grid knowledge service.Chapter Five discusses technology related to grid knowledge resource management, including the acquisition and modeling of grid knowledge, knowledge publishing and maintenance based on grid portal, annotation and reasoning of grid knowledge.Chapter Six analyzes the application cases of grid knowledge management, including the typical application of grid knowledge management—the project ofe-Science and the application of grid knowledge management in scientific research (the project of myGrid) and engineering design (the project of Geodise).
