As the first systematic expounding of national administrative laws in China's history, Hongfan from Shangshu, since its birth, has received extensive publicity. Nearly 2000 years history from Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty leaves us many literatures annotating Hongfan, some of which explain it in detail or in general, some of which try to make the difficult points clear or to correct the mistakes. A complete set of annotating system is formed thus. The accumulation and formation of traditional Chinese culture depends both on the Classical works and on the literatures annotating these works; therefore, it is of high scholastic value to make a systematic and overall study of the literatures annotating Hongfan. Still, many literatures annotating Hongfan, basing themselves on the thought of "being applicable to practical politics", make a thorough analysis of nine administrative laws point by point, either tracing back to the original meanings of its allusions or digging into its tenets, and seek the linking point serving both the country and the society. No doubt, the ideas and principles in these literatures, nevertheless, can be made reference to for the development of modern society. The body of the dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is about the study of annotating literatures for Hongfan during Han Dynasty. Chapter two is intended to study the literatures annotating Hongfan from Wei and Jin Dynasties to Sui and Tang Dynasties. Chapter three focuses on the literatures annotating Hongfan during Song Dynasty. Chapter four is attempted to make a research on the literatures annotating Hongfan. Each chapter is further made up of four parts:Part one historical and cultural influence on HongfanIn this part, background materials associated with annotations of Hongfan are selected in terms of political atmosphere and academic trend of thought with an attempt to concentrating on important points and avoiding empty words.Part two a general survey to the annotating literaturesIn this part, the literatures annotating Hongfan from Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty are systematically organized and surveyed. Founded on the raw materials, the judgments on the literatures are to be fair, objective and comprehensive.Part three the features of annotating HongfanIn this part, the features of annotating Hongfan in different eras are summarized from all-facet and multi-angular perspective, such as content, thought, principles, methods and styles, of annotating Hongfan. Because of the difference in situations for different eras, this part of each chapter is not confined in the above points, and possibly only two points or many points are mentioned; however, each part is to be arranged by following some standards while at time same time all parts are made sure to be in good order rather than rigid orderPart four the analysis of representative works annotating Hongfan In this part, the part chooses as the representative work of each era those which can reflect the features of that era and are of significant influence on the history of annotating Hongfan, and analyzes the works from such aspects as author, text, content, style and thought of annotating, explanation of words and textual research of specific questions. The originalities and main conclusions of the dissertation is as follows: 1. To overcome the problems of narrow scope, unitary perspective, lack of consistency and comprehensiveness in annotating Hongfan, the dissertation makes comprehensive and multi-perspective researches into the annotations from Han Dynasty to Ming Dynasty systematically for the first time and thus makes up for the shortcomings and defects in the field of annotations of Hongfan. 2. In terms of research method, the dissertation, starting from philology and based on documents themselves, combines macro-organization and micro-analysis, and both analyzes thoroughly the key works of each era and summarizes the features of annotating Hongfan of each era, with an attempt to embodying the characteristics of this subject and giving consideration to the needs of research on annotating Hongfan at the same time. 3. In the analysis of historical and cultural background, background materials associated with annotations of Hongfan are selected in terms of political atmosphere and academic trend of thought with an attempt to concentrating on important points and avoiding empty words. 4. Also discussed carefully in this dissertation are those literatures of annotating Hongfan with some features and values. For example, after the analysis, Wuxingdayi by Xiaoji of Sui Dynasty is considered an epitome of works on Five-element theory; Hongfantulun by Suxun of Song Dynasty is regarded as significant in opposing Five-element and Disaster theory; and Hongfanbuzhu by Pan Shiquan of Qing Dynasty, taken by predecessors as a shame, is thought to beconducive in disclosing his tricks of astrology if studied systematically. 5. Some specific problems involved in the annotations of Hongfan are under careful exmamination and research. For instance, the predecessors only have a vague idea of the relations between Hongfanwuxingzhuan and Shangshudazhuan, while through careful investigation in this dissertation, it is confirmed that Hongfanwuxingzhuan written by Fusheng is an article of Shangshudazhuan. 6. On the basis of summarizing the features of annotations of Hongfan for each era, it is finally found that the annotations of Hongfan, influenced by great political and cultural background, follow its own rule of development as follows. 1) The annotations of Hongfan are closely related to politics. Because Hongfan itself is the classics about how to administrate a nation, its annotations will be thriving whenever the rulers advocate the administration of a nation by Confucian thoughts. 2) The idea of Five-element and Disaster runs throughout the progress of the annotations of Hongfan. The annotations of Hongfan by using the idea of Five-element and Disaster starts with Hongfan wuxingzhuan. Afterwards, its annotations of each dynasty are inevitably divided into two schools: the annotations defending the idea of Five-element and Disaster and the ones opposing the idea of Five-element and Disaster. 3) The annotations of Hongfan are marked by the era. 4) As an important part of traditional Chinese Confucian classics, the thriving of annotations of Hongfan concurs with that of Confucian classics; the old-Confucian and Neo-Confucian orthodoxies have an influence on the style of annotating Hongfan. In conclusion, by taking a case or two as an example for the rest to follow, the dissertation, starting from philology and based on documents themselves, combines macro-organization and microanalysis, makes comprehensive and multi-perspective researches into the annotations from Han Dynasty to Ming Dynasty systematically for the first time and thus makes up for the shortcomings and defects in the field of annotations of Hongfan. The research on this subject can not only reflect the trace of development of Chinese Confucian classics and promote the deeper study of Confucian classics but also supply the researches into the Chinese history of thoughts and Chinese history of philosophy for reference with historical materials. It is also helpful to having a clear idea of trace of development and formation of the traditional Chinese culture. Still, in this dissertation the detailed and close examinations of the specific problems are also a supplement to the predecessors' shortcomings. Moreover, the disclose and criticism of absurdity and hypocrisy of Five-element and Disaster theory, the theory of Luoshu and astrology will be conducive in making people fully aware of the tricks of astrology of Qing Dynasty and completely get rid of the shadow of feudalist superstition over Hongfan.
