In this thesis, the advantages and disadvantages of current optical computer architectures were analyzed. Beyond this, on the ground of the basic principle of constructing an optical computer and the natures of light, a fire-new ternary optical computer theory was put forward for the first time. Applying two perpendicular polarized light states and a no-light state to express information, this new theoretical system covers: a) whole architecture constructed from light processing, light transmission, electric control and photoelectric input and output; b) various computing units mainly consist of liquid crystal element and polarimeter; c) light bus mainly consists of interlinkage optic valves; d) ternary memory formed from semiconductor memory; e) register formed from optic fiber ring; and i) huge-numeral management based on the new concept of calculating path and calculating channel. Furthermore, the new theory was proposed to be also applicable in optical fiber communication. As a result, the ternary optical fiber communication theory was established, and therefore introduced a new and safer method to transmit secret key.The theoretical achievements that have been obtained in this paper can be summarized as follows:1. The theoretical rudiment of ternary optical computer system was established, moreover, the general architecture of a ternary optical computer and the optical architecture of principal parts were constructed.2. The add operation optical channel that can fulfill standing carry was set up, which solved the problem of uncertain carry-delay encountered in huge-numeral add operation with common successive earn.3. The optical channels to realize ternary logical calculus resulting from universal logics were designed.4. The concept of calculating path and calculating channel was put forward. On the basis of this new concept, the huge-numeral management system in an optical computer was set up, and therefore the character of software in an optical computer was shown.5. The ternary optical computer theory was generalized to optical fiber communication, resulting in the theory establishment, realizable plan and specific method of ternary optical fiber communication, and6. The secret key transmission method adopting ternary optical fiber communication was proposed.Additionally, the underway researches on producing coder and decoder in a ternary optical computer as well as group-signal converter for realization system of ternary optical fiber communication were introduced in this thesis. Some experiments done by others were quoted to prove the ternary optical computer theory.By the way, the new thought that constructing optical simulation intelligent machine from ternary optical computer, which was first suggested by Prof. He Huacan, was also involved in this thesis.
