The complex systems include natural phenomena,biology,economy,management,military,polity,society and so on. Complex systems are the ones with a great many interactive components among which the relationships are complicated and uncertain. The global-behavior of complex systems is non-linear and cannot be deduced from the local characteristics. The fmacial stock market in econimic system,which involves lots of investors,corporations,governments and so on,is such a system. The classical stock theory cannot explain the behaviors of stock market well due to the miscellaneous and indeterminate factors in economic systems. The batterfields are also typical complex systems. It is crucial for the development of national society and economy to study the complex systems.The system simulation is the uppermost and effective means for the research of complex system. And the primary problem of it is the methodology of modeling and simulation. The agent-based modeling and simulation methodology is the hot topic. This paper focuses on how to utilize the resource of network cluster,and depends on the agent-based modeling and simulation methodology,realizes a distributed simulation platform to carry out large-scale complex systems and understand the behavior of complex systems ultimately.The paper can be divided into three parts. The provenance and the characteristics of complex systems are stated in the first part. The apprehension of complex systems from ontology,epistemology and methodology is also stated. And the significance of modeling and simulation in the reaserch of complex systems is emphasized.The agent-based modeling and simulation methodology is expatiated wholly and systemically. Thereafter,the complex systems are defined formally according to this methodology. The principles and steps,which should be followed in agent-based complex systems modeling and simulation,are established.Due to the large-scale and complicated structure of complex systems,it is necessary to exploit the parallism of complex systems and the models. In the second part of the paper,an agent-based complex systems distributed simulation framework is formed firstly. Compared to the other simulation projects,this distributed simulation framework has lots of advantages,such as platform-independence,scalability,hierarchical simulation,etc.The common distributed simulation algorithms cannot meet the requirements of complex systems due to the characteristics of complex systems and simulation environment. A hierarchical and hybrid distributed simulation algorithm,which fits the agent-based complex systems distributed simulation well,is proposed. The correctness and efficiency of the algorithm are verified by the test results.Providing a flexible,efficient and alication-transarent communication sstem amon theagents is important for the convenience and efficiency of modeling and simulation. In the paper,a whole communication system with the communication protocols between different layers is presented. And an algorithm,which can support the agent migration apprarently,is also proposed. Compared with the other migration mechanisms,the algorithm has higher efficiency.According to the comprehension of complex systems and complexity,the agent-based complex systems distributed simulation platform JCass (Java-based Complex Adaptive Systems distributed Simulation platform) is realized based on the agent-based complex systems distributed simulation framework. The JCass takes full advantage of the ideal of object-oriented design and offers a non-redundant class structure. Users can carry through distributed simulation of all fields on JCass with great flexibility and simplicity.To avoid re-execution of the whole simulation system on condition that some nodes or agents are invalidated,a distributed simulation scheme with fault-tolerant mechanism is proposed,including fault classification,fault detection,the fault-tolerant extension of distributed simulation algorithm,and dual global service agents.With the prevalent of the Internet and...
