Smart home space is a pervasive service space integrating service-oriented com-puting and pervasive computing technologies. It is constructed based on embeddedcomputing devices, home applications and multi-modal interactive devices, which areaimed to provide transparent and intelligent services for home users actively.At present, there still exist some obstacles to the implementation of smart homespace. (1) A service middleware platform is required to support application businessin smart home space. (2) Because of the strong heterogeneities within home networksand household equipments, it is necessary to provide a unified service adaptation andresource sharing mechanism for service integration. (3) The execution of service de-pends on manual operation, rather than initiative and intelligent behavior approachessupported by context awareness. This research is supported by the Smart-home KeyTechnology R&D Project of National Key Technology Support Program. The contri-butions of this dissertation are as follows:1. Asmarthomespacemiddleware(SHSM)isproposedtosolvetheproblemsofin-telligent service integration and invocation. A rule-driven application executionmechanism is designed in the workflow to implement the context-aware serviceautomation in digital home.2. An agent is designed to abstract functionalities of resource-constrained devicesinto web services which are hosted by a virtual device. A 3-tier device driverarchitecture is proposed for flexible implementation of service description anddevice standardization. A workflow-based device driver language is introducedinthe3-tierarchitectureforplatform-independentdriverimplementationforsim-ple communication protocols.3. An automatic service rules generation system is constructed to obtain servicerules from the history context when the services is invoked in smart home spacebased on rough set theory. A service rules management tool is developed toachieve the automatic extraction and visual correction for service rules based on user's preference. The system provides an effective approach to automaticallygenerate service rules for smart-home intelligent space, instead of processingthem manually.4. An approach of automatic service composition is proposed for smart home appli-cations. The approach divides the service composition process into two stages.The first stage is to implement automatic process modeling based on programsynthesis theory. The given process model of composite service satisfies basicinput/output semantic definitions to the objective service. The second stage is toachievetheoptimizedchoices forthe componentservicesintheprocessmodelofcomposite service based on the proposed QoS evaluation model. The goal of theapproach is to provide high-quality composite services for potential smart homeapplication business.
