The term of Consumption from economics not only applies to sociology of consumption, but also to a growing range;at present it is widely used in the consumption of text or media products by readers or audiences. As far as Television Consumption is concerned, this essay is approached mostly from the view of sociology and cultual studies on consumption, that is, we view television not just as the consumption of a household appliance, but a disseminator——the consumption of a communication media. In addition,we are the potential consumer of the commodities displayed on the television. The dissertation attempts to illustrate the project of television consumption from three sections:the consumption of television as a appliance and media, well-informed television audiences, household consumption of television; namely, Who and In what context and How to consume television. Based on several western theories on consumption and consumerism, and by implementing academic resources like communicology, cultural studies, sociology, plutonomy, post modern theory etc and connecting with the chinese practical context, the essay, on one hand, provides a new knowledge of the relationship between audience and television and a new way to comprehend and appreciate or criticize television,to help the audience understand, comprehend, and criticize the information and signifcance, and thus to gain the decoding skill of consumption of TV and to make the audience more capable to tame cultural circumstances. On the other hand, in view of the existing problems in our TV cosumption, and in referrence to the foreign theories and policies on TV consumption, this dissertation tries to shed a light on standardizing our TV consumption, and to make it develop in a healthy and sustainable way.
